Computers and Cars

I get into my car, hit the Start button, and drive away. Why can computers and printers work as reliably? They're indoors, they don't move around much, there are almost no moving parts, and they've been around for decades. Let me give you an example.

I have two short videos that play on VLC and I wanted to combine them. Simple, right? No. Following three sets of online directions, I was able to get only part of the way. The online directions didn't exactly follow what I had on my screen, and the results I got at different steps were slightly different from online. After wasting time with that, I gave up.

Today, I opened PowerDirector, and I duce a video.

I found a recent installation file for PD on my computer and installed it. Then it wanted the 26-letter Key. I entered it. "Invalid Key" How could it be invalid?

I went to my Dell and started PowerDirector, but it would not accept the file I had saved from the evaluation program. It was a different file system. I had to go through the lengthy process of copying the long video and music from one machine to an SSD and then onto the other machine. I think that should be finished now, so I'll go in and see what new problems await me.

By this point, I'm sure it will be too late for me to go to the senior meeting, so I'll take a nap instead.

My computers are much more reliable than my car. It's the cars that I found hard to keep them reliable.

Aren’t “senior meetings” by default, also nap times? They are where I live. 😂😂

Printers are a lot cheaper than cars.

Average life of a computer for me is 12 years,
mostly due to OS upgrades.

One car-14, my truck-23, current-13.

cars are just big computers on wheels. Maybe if you took you computer for a drive it would be more motivated to work correctly

It is because we expect our computers to do so many different things with software written by so many different people and with all sorts of hardware attached that there are almost infinite variations your computer needs to handle. With your car you only have what is built in and very little opportunity to make variations. You just push the start button. Your computer wishes its life could be so easy:)

I have computers that are in like new condition yet I can't use them. My car is quite new but it's no where in like new condition. If the car I had 40 years ago is still in like new condition today I can still use it and be very happy with it too. Imagine if I have the 69 GTO in like new condition?
So cars get broken easily but don't get obsolete easily. Computers last a long time but they get obsolete quickly.

Yes, life is tough, but the alternative is worse.

See Jerry. I told you the other day that you were always complaining about computers and printers.

Cars have been around since the 1890s while computers have only been around since the 1960s -- in another sixty years they will have perfected them.

Computers almost never break. You throw them away while in good condition.
