My brother just bought a canon 2x II teleconverter for his 100-400mm canon ef lens. Have any of you had any experience with this? I told him it would make his lens too slow to be of much use taking the speed from 4-5.6 to f8-f11. He paid a good buck for it. What are your thoughts on this item?

I use the 2x with a 100-400 with good results as long as the light is right.
The disadvantage is that you lose AF unless in LiveView mode.

Tele-extenders dramatically effect lens aperture range. Your numbers are correct.

I have this set-up for both my 5D MKII and 7D. I normally only use it on a Manfrotto tripod for moon shots or in REALLY good light. Tell him to use live view & turn off the IS if on the tripod.
