The Capitol

Which Capitol? The one where the Union was going to be Stated of that night. Or maybe it was a speech of campaigning. Probably both. Because most things are not just one thing. Some things are many things. But I’m told that nothing is all things to all people.

And it’s certainly a Capitol and not a capitol, because it has to be properly Capitolized.

Intriguing composition choices. I much prefer the first with 4 or 5 fewer stripes, but that's me. Tell me your thought process, Jared, if you have the time and interest to discuss.

Are you asking about the photos artistically, symbolically, or more along the lines of “what were you thinking?!” 😄

With respect to the first, the actions of the federal government loom so large in our lives, affecting everything from the safety of the food we eat to the drugs that try to keep life humming along to our means of transportation to the cleanliness of the air we breathe and the water we drink (which, aside, I wish we got to hear more about rather than the he said, she said that dominates political reporting). The framing on this one communicates to me stability because of the strong horizontal lines at the foundation and at the same time our feeble attempt to throw back the encroaching darkness of the sky and the trees, nature coming to claim her own. I wanted the Capitol to feel a little small in the frame because so often it and what happens there take up so much of our attention. Left to itself, the building is imposing and huge. Framed with some context, we see that it’s just one part of a more involved tapestry of life.

The second is a picture of a building. 😉

But really, the first is me trying to dig out what my subconscious was thinking. My thought process was something like, “Ooh, I haven’t seen that perspective before! I wonder what it would look like with a wide lens.” Click. Except there wasn’t a click because phone.

Thank you!!

Yes, artistically was the basis of my query. I can fully relate to "dig out of subsconcious" and "haven't seen that perspective before!" I like your after-the-fact description of government's role and the amount of attention it receives. I wouldn't have equated the crosswalk lines with what you said, but I very much enjoy learning what you thought or didn't think and created by inner voice.

Very well done Jared. I really like your first image but as I move it around I would eliminate 2 or 3 of the cross walk lines.

I disagree with the comments above regarding the number of crosswalk lines. I find the lines as presented, supplemented by the barricades and fencing, to be as interesting as the capital building itself, especially in light of January 6. Sometimes, it is not just about one subject. Great composition!
