I'm sorry to see disks going out of use because I still use CDs and DVDs, and whenever possible, I have two drives in my desktop. Unfortunately, this Dell I bought a few years ago (XPS30) cannot accept a drive. My son got an XPS40, and I was able to add two drives to that. When I want to use a disk with the Dell, I plug in an external drive. Now that I'm back to using Big Red, I have my two drives back. Two drives are perfect for making copies. I'm tempted to buy a couple of drives in case they are no longer available in the future.

How many of you have optical drives?

Our old desktop had two, my old laptop had one. The new ones, none.
I bought an external portable drive that I can move between computers.
I still have stuff on CDs also.

You meant the XPS30 doesn't have a SATA port?

I still like to have at least one, with two being better. Back in 2016 about 11pm on Thanksgiving Day, I walked into Best Buy & purchased a Dell Allienware R5 with one optical. When setting up itunes, one of the cd's was to thick for the drive bay to close so purchased a external from B&H. Did the job plus can be used for the tv, (have never tried it for the tvyet) slides shows , etc.

It probably doesn't have a Serial port, either.

I can bet all of Jerry current computers don't have a serial port.

None internal to a PC, UNFORTUNATELY!

I have 2 external drives. 1 was ordered, from Dell, as part of purchase of a laptop a few years ago. The other one purchased when I realized that the Dell drive would not write to high capacity M disks (I think the term is M disks but I am too lazy to go look)

You mean internal - to connect a drive? I don't recall, but there's no provision inside to place the drive. The XPS40 has a standard drive mount location - for two drives.

Internal expansion, not acessible from the front, for additional hard drives? Mine has that.
The older boxes had bay(s) at the top of the computer. One contained a factory installed CD drive, just under that was a spare bay, I removed the little "face plate" and added another CD drive. The new box has no expansion bays at the top of the box.

Yes, perfect of HDD or SSD. Not so good for a DVD drive.

Different expansion bays.......
None the less, expansion bays.

In a REAL OLD box I added a 3.5 inch floppy and a CD up top.

That's an alternative - put the drive on top.

Um... Not an external on top of the box, in one of the top bays,
that no longer exist in new boxes.

My external CD is to the right of the tower on the table

Mine mainly gets used for movies or music now. But if I ever have to reload from scratch I have the disks.
I also have an external drive for the tablets and laptops.

I also produce my own music disks for use in the car.
