"if an autonomous weapon mistakenly kills a civilian under the belief that they were a legitimate military target, the question of accountability arises"
Hell, this applies to any type of weapon not just AI ones! Gaza and the Ukraine are cases in point.

Civilians have been killed in war since the beginning of war. With robots, the numbers could climb quickly. It's hard enough for military personnel to tell enemy from civilian, so what can we expect from a robot? How could you program it to tell the difference? Actually, many civilians actually are the enemy. There is no solution to this.

And Iraq and Afghanistan among others. US drone strikes have killed probably thousands of non-combatants.
The US needs to own up to the carnage it is directly responsible for.

I'm fairly sure at least a fair portion of the 200,000+/- people killed in Iraq were non-combatants; in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Yup, the only solution is a total end to armed conflict and this isn't going to happen any time soon with Homo sapiens! We're a violent species.
