I found that RED has their manufacturing plant in California. Just hope that Nikon doesn't move the plant to Thailand.
Nikon said they will leave Red as Red. We shall see.
Red has only 200 employees, vs Nikon's 20,000 employees worldwide. Nikon can afford to leave Red's 200 folks where they are, and where they are needed, close to Hollywood.
But interestingly, some current Red video cameras use Canon RF lens mounts, a Red agreement with Canon that allows some Canon cameras to do compressed raw video recording internally.
1) Will Nikon/Red now license that compressed raw video recording to Sony, Panasonic and others? Nikon and Sony have a long history of a profitable business partnership.
2) Now that Nikon owns Red will it still make Red cameras with RF lens mount or change them to Z lens mounts ?
3) Now the Nikon has access to Red's sensors and sensor tech, will Nikon no longer buy sensors from Sony and start to use Red designed sensors, including Red's super 35mm (APS-C) global shutter sensor with 17 stops of dynamic range?
4) Now that Nikon has Red's line of motion picture quality digital movie cameras, will Nikon also now produce major motion pictures like Sony.
Sony not only makes a superior line of Venice cinema and 3-D cinema cameras using PL-mount and E-mount lenses, and has its FX cameras and E-mount lenses being used to also make major motion pictures like the recent Sci-Fi film, "The Creator" , but Sony Pictures also produces major motion pictures bringing in hundreds of millions to billions in box office revenues.
Will Nikon risk venturing into the major movie making business now?
Exciting future ahead for Nikon for sure. I wish them all the best.
Cheers
