I was backpacking in Northern California with my wife. I didn’t realize that where I was camping was accessible by motorcyclists from the other side of the mountain. They were getting way too close for comfort, and I was getting a bad vibe. I took my pistol out of my bag and strapped it on my waist. They left the area.

As a retired cop I can't agree with you more. I don't have the statistics and it is not worth me looking them up but I believe more criminals are killed by citizens carrying a firearm than by the police who get there AFTER the shots are fired. Many times the act of citizens just displaying a firearm leads to no crime happening that day or not to that citizen.

I agree that learning more about carrying if one chooses to so is an important topic. Like photography it's often about more than equipment - training, learning the law and understanding the aftermath should it happen.
Yep. I wouldn't own a firearm without knowing all of that. It's a huge responsibility.

Nope! Not unusual. Necessary equipment.

I believe in open carry in principle, but these days it's a snatch and grab invitation.
There is a video on Youtube where a gentleman openly carrying was attacked going into a store. The attacker THOUGHT this open carrying individual was going to shoot up the store and was trying to be the good guy. The attacker had to be dragged off the honest citizen before police arrived.
As an ex cop I have never liked open carry for that reason and also because if you are carrying openly anyone can come up to you, point a finger in your back and demand your out in the open firearm. Better nobody knows you are carrying as protection to you and everyone else when you may need that firearm.

I carry dental floss to tie back branches et.al. that may interfere with my composition, black tape, safety pins, and other handy items.
I carry my MacBook Air and a small hub to connect it to TVs, projectors, monitors, audio, wired Ethernet, SD cards, and various USB-A devices. I also carry a ten foot HDMI cable, and a few audio adapters. What good is traveling to make images and record videos if you can't present them when needed?
That's the trainer in me... I was often on the road, presenting by day, creating or modifying content after hours.
I also carry four chargers (for phone, computer, flash AA batteries, camera batteries), a MagSafe-compatible battery bank with USB-C out, spare batteries for flash, spare camera batteries, spare wireless mic system batteries... A spare pen, Sharpie marker, note pad, tiny tabletop tripod, spare earbuds for camera and computer, with adapter for iPhone...

Do those who carry pistols when they are out “shooting,” have you ever saw the need to use them in any way or discharge them?
Not yet, thank God. It's a last ditch insurance policy.

... absolutely
I presume that if armed bad guys come to wherever I am... if I carry concealed, I may have a chance to protect myself but if I open carry they may kill me before I even realize what is going on... for them, I would be their 1st logical target.
Also, I do NOT wish to make someone uneasy. while I have owned/carried for many-many years and enjoyed shooting... I respect the right of someone to not like guns and not be around them... then the logical approach is that I exercise my right but not display to them

This is the attitude of knowledgeable, level-headed gun owners.

Not only do I carry one of those(usually on my person and not in the bag) but once a long time ago I was able to thwart being robbed of my camera gear in a large state park.
