Glad you found it. I have one that was my Grandfathers, I got it when he passed away in 1975.

I used to have an "Old Timer" when I was a kid. Back then, many grade school students had pocket knives... there was never a problem and they were never used as weapons. I don't know what ever happened to it. For the last 40 or 50 years, I carry my Swiss Army knife... and have it in my pocket nearly always.

God & an Old Timer Knife

Cool & true story, please read. Sunday, March 3rd, 2024

Last summer I took down a long section of barbed wire fence on our property. Later on I noticed that I was missing a small pocket knife that I always carry. It’s very small, closed it comes in at 2 ¾ inch. I liked it because it did almost all the jobs I needed it to do and it didn’t take up much room in my pocket.

I looked all around the house and in all our chairs – nothing. Then, I figured I might have lost it while kneeling down and unhooking all the strands of barbed wire from the T-posts.

After I had taken the fence down I mowed the grass and weeds short along the stretch where the fence had been. So, I went out and looked back and forth along that section several times finding nothing.

That section is along the edge of our property on the perimeter that I always walk with our dogs. Every time I walk them I go slow along there looking down, back and forth searching for the knife.

Today I did the same thing because the snow is gone, the grass is tamped down from the winter’s snow and hasn’t started to grow yet. I got about ¾ of the way through that area and stopped. Again, nothing. This time, I started to pray. I talk with God a lot but I had never actually taken the time to mention the knife. So I prayed something like this, “Lord, I know that little knife is pretty insignificant, but I really liked it, and if I lost it in this area, please help me to find it.” Simple, short.

I opened my eyes, took two steps, looked down and there it was off to my left about two feet away. It was rusted and open with the small blade out. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

Picture one is the fenceline.
Two is the Old Timer knife.
Three is it after cleaning it off.
Four is the Old Timer compared to the other one my grandfather had given me, yellow and though still small, it takes up a lot more room in my pocket.

Moral of the story – Always ask for God’s help FIRST, no matter how insignificant you think the problem might be.

Ya, God is great for stuff like that and for making your team victorious on Saturdays, but when it comes to the lottery he's useless.

Agree with your “ Moral of the story – Always ask for God’s help FIRST, no matter how insignificant you think the problem might be.” … but I do have to keep reminding myself

I have an "OLD TIMER" that belonged to my dad... don't carry it, for fear of losing it.

Great story and great knife, Kim. I had one in the 70s and in was very useful, lost it, found it, lost again, forever.

I've owned several Oldtimers through the years (They did not have locking blades....you had to be a little careful in the old days.)

Love it! It can be easy to think that God wouldn’t care about little, insignificant things like this, but your story proves the opposite. He cares about our problems, no matter the size!

Obviously God must play favorites.

He certainly didn't answer my prayers when my first two children were in NICU. And he certainly didn't answer my prayers on easter sunday when my son was hit by a careless driver.

But maybe lost knives are more important in the grand scheme of things....

In my younger days, I was working the overnight shift at a Kansas City, Missouri convenience store and while sweeping up debris on the parking lot found a couple twenty dollar bills folded together out in the middle of lot. I pocketed the money and went in to wait on a lady who had just stopped at the store. I mentioned what had happened to her "Hey, I just found two twenties out on the parking lot. She says "God left those for you to find" I say "More likely they were lost by some working guy" She said that God answers prayers sometimes even when you don't know that you need His help.

She then went on to tell me a story about the power of prayer. She said that she was indowntown Kansas City for an appointment and was driving around the block trying to find a place to park. Finally she said "I just said to God, 'God, I'm gonna be late. Please, please help me find a place to park" She then said that she drove around the block three more times and "don't you know it, God found me a parking place right in front of the building where my appointment was" She left and I went back to my work.

I’m sorry if that’s impression I left by that comment. My prayers haven’t always been answered the way I wanted them to be either. I, too, have had heartbreaking experiences in my life. Sometimes He says “No” and that can be pretty hard to accept and I want to ask “Why, o God, does it have to be this way?” But I know that He can see the whole picture, whereas I see only a very small portion of it, and that He knows what’s best, so I do my best to leave everything in His hands. We can’t always understand why certain things happen, but we’ll understand it later on (if not in this life, then in the next).

A much simpler way to find your knife would be to just go out and buy a new one. Your old one would have shown up shortly afterwards. That's the way things work. [8^)

Like many others on here, I HAD another knife (I even pictured it, the yellow one). It's just that the one I lost was my favorite and the one I always carried. I was given several through the years by both of my grandfathers, and my parents bought me one (which I still have) when I was a little kid, very similar to the Old Timer.

I was also gifted a Swiss Army Knife by my Father-in-law, but that one is just too big to carry all the time.

Our collection of old (pocket knives), hidden in my bathroom drawer, are a tribute to the different jobs, I've held, that required a different pocket knife for each one.
The fire department was, obviously, the larger, but the smaller ones were just as important.

After 25 years of carrying a (larger), buck knife while running to fires, I started working for a school district
and trying to hide a smaller version in my pocket was difficult.....especially, when sitting down and having the little 3 inch (Saber) fall onto the floor. The gasps by teachers and students, was laughable. ((students were not allowed to carry knives in elementary school,)) but were allowed to sneak their Father's hand gun in for show and tell.

If I worked at the school, now days, I'd really like to have a CCW (and) a small caliber weapon to keep the wolves away during and after school hours.

A good knife is more than just a letter opener and a box cutter.....
