I suppose I wouldn't mind paying for a firmware update that would allow me to upgrade my camera to the latest features without buying a new camera. It would be the same as editing software before the subscription model...you decided whether or not to upgrade based on what benefit you felt you'd get from the new version. I don't think I'd like to pay monthly for firmware updates, though...

I agree with terry and being able to upgrade the firmware to give better performance will probably sell a lot more Z models.

And then they will charge for the firmware update.

Could be. That is what is suggested in the article.

Kind of like a Cell Phone - but bigger?
(Cell phones should outsize cameras for all that they do.)

Kind of like buying an aftermarket market chip to put in your diesel pickup to get more horsepower. My brother needed more power pulling a livestock trailer so instead of trading trucks, he swapped out CPU chips. Lots more power but it did cost him fuel economy.

So instead of replacing your fully functional old camera with a new one, you merely upgrade the existing camera. I also suspect there’s more money to be made by having a few people write new software than there is having a lot of people manufacturing new stuff. It has certainly worked for Microsoft.

That allows Nikon to make money without having to make anything. No more back order like they experienced when they launched the Z9. I have been a Nikon user for a long long time but I don't think I would buy a new Nikon any more.

Not making anything is a good point, but that isn’t always required. Studebaker stopped making automobiles in 1966, but the parent company then switched to finances. To me “making” a loan isn’t exactly making something like a house, but that loan is often necessary to build or make the house.

The heart surgeon that replaced my aortic valve with one from a dead cow didn’t really make anything, other than making me darned happy that I can again out walk my young coworkers.

In the not too distant future, you will be subscribing to use a digital camera. At some point, the end user will not own anything - everything will be subscription or rental.

I have always maintained that future-proofing is impossible. Nobody knows the future so how can you protect against the unknown. The best you can do is future-resistant.

The same comment applies to foolproof.

Future proof???????
If the camera you buy today is good for you and unless it's broken why isn't it good any more in the future?

Some people are satisfied with something and don’t feel the need to replace it as long as it does the job. I’ve had one of my farm tractors for 45 years, another 44 years and my “newest” for 34 years and all were thoroughly used when I bought them. My brother was/is the opposite. Between the ages of 16-21, he bought, drove and sold 17 cars and trucks. I don’t know how many tractors he’s gone through. Each one was always the perfect vehicle or tractor, for a while at least and then it was shopping time again.

Some people are satisfied with something and don’t... (show quote)

Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Or do without
