PLEASE DO NOT REAWAKE THESE ZOMBIE THREADS!!!!

Seemingly, some people use the cruel joke that is the UHH 'search' function to find zombie (old) topics to respond to, most always finding them years after the OP was departed active participation on UHH, if not also departing entirely this ephemeral plain.

Others clearly fat-finger the Main Discussion navigation buttons with <Last> instead of <Next>. Nothing to be found from 2011 is helpful to 2024.

I can't speak for Admin, but I would think he would enjoy increasing the traffic on UHH. It improves the site's advertising profile.

As a reminder, zombie topics show up only for those of us navigating the Main Discussion directly. We're a small minority of the registered users. The vast majority rely on the Daily Digest, something that captures just a slice of 'new' topics created over the prior 24-hours before distribution. The site's departed don't deliver new clicks on zombie threads.

If that's an issue these old posts would be removed by admin. Take it up with him.

I have suggested in the past that old threads could be presented using a different color to mark them as old threads. I don't think this would be difficult to achieve, and if the thread title were maybe orange or some bright color, it would be immediately obvious that it is a zombie thread. But it wouldn't prevent someone from responding to it. I would not be surprised if there existed old threads that have current value, maybe by some past event recurring or a new occurrence of something related to the thread.

But marking the threads as zombie threads would make it easier for people who want to avoid zombie threads to do so.

It would be up to Admin to define the time period used to determine a zombie thread.

Your link goes to a Main Photography page from 2011. Which post are you wanting to drag back up? You could have just made a new reply to one of them to drag it back up. Or even better you could just make a new post on the subject.

Unless I am reading him wrongly, I think Bill is referring to the demeanor of the old posts not necessarily the content. In some cases, the gear and technology have changed but topics about aesthetics, basic theory, lighting, composition, and much more are still valid.

Frankly, as a long-time member, I am cutting down on my participation because of the protracted arguments that are ongoing.

Courticy, kindness, agreeing to disagree, clean debates, and comradery never goes out of style.

Seems folks here and everywhere are normalizing bad behavior.

You might want to look a bit closer before editorializing on the current membership population ...

A simple count of the oldest two pages shows the vast majority of the topics were started (aka seeded) by ADMIN under the pseudonym = Ugly Hedgehog Newsletter

Back in the day, circa 2011-12, there wasn't something called the ATTIC. There wasn't a User ID either. But, there was a community member like JR1, who didn't differ much from later incarnations ...

Personally, I have found perusing threads from the past to be helpful, as there are some on topics of interest to me with civil, helpful discussion of things that maybe are of no interest to the super-advanced whizzes who now know everything about photography and now just want to haggle about favorite brands and personal non-negotiable preferences..... newbies go pound sand, and others don't bother trying to steer the forum away from the arguments of uselessness.

The argumentativeness is not brand new, though.
There are old threads, and old comments mentioning the unfriendliness and bickering and disdain for those who don't know everything the whizzes know.
Some of those old threads seem to be from within the first ten months or so of the earliest threads. So, starting over may seem like a good starting point, but that may require starting without those who just get their jollies out of being the friendliness wreckers.
