What A Great Idea

Got this in my e-mail today

Here's the way it should be:
Let's put the seniors in jail and the criminals in nursing homes.
This would correct two things in one motion:
Seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.
They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical
Treatment, wheel chairs, etc.
They would receive money instead of having to pay it out.
They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly... If they fell or needed assistance..
Bedding would be washed twice a week and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.
A guard would check on them every 20 minutes.
All meals and snacks would be brought to them.
They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling, a pool and education...and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.
Simple clothing - i.e.. Shoes, slippers, pj's - and legal aid would be free, upon request.
There would be private, secure rooms provided for all with an outdoor exercise yard complete with gardens.
Each senior would have a P.C., T.V., phone and radio in their room at no cost.
They would receive daily phone calls.
There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints and the ACLU would fight for their rights and protection.
The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to, with attorneys available, at no charge to protect the seniors and their families from abuse or neglect.

As for the criminals:

They would receive cold food.
They would be left alone and unsupervised.
They would receive showers once a week.
They would live in tiny rooms, for which they would have to pay $5,000 per month.
They would have no hope of ever getting out.

I go regularly into several federal prisons as a volunteer and prison life is so far from what is described that what I read sickens me.

"They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical. and They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly... If they fell or needed assistance.."
The reality is that when prisoners get sick or ill, they get the minimal of care, usually by a nurse or doctor of questionable ability.
I heard of a doctor that would not do much treatment because he wanted to look good to the administration by cutting costs. It took several years for many problems to come to light before he was fired. By then, there were many costly hospitalizations and costs that could have been prevented.
I know of an inmate that had a minor foot problem, and it took 2 years to get any treatment during which time it festered, and now he has a large hole through his foot. When it got really bad, he was hospitalized at a huge cost that was not necessary if he had gotten earlier treatment.
No matter what the illness or condition, meds are only given 2 times a day at a pill line. And forget about any pain meds of a strong nature for back pain and such. I have personally met inmates in constant pain and barely able to move.
There was a mention of food. I have visited several federal prisons over about 10+ years. Food used to be reasonably good but no choices. The federal food budget has been cut drastically and now the food is slop. I know because we eat with the inmates. The last time I ate with them, the food was so bad that I could barely gag it down, but I did because I knew it was all that they had to eat.
I will also tell you that protection is almost non-existent.
I once met a man, that because of his feminine appearance and mannerisms, became a victim of rape and was being sold by prison gangs. He reported the problem and HE was put in solitary. The standard response, as I have heard, is to separate the victim and move him to another prison and not bother the predators.
I will not even go into what happens when a predator is a weak inmate's cellie.
I won't go into the rest of the lines because, with a few exceptions, they are sheer fantasy.
I know banging on prisoners seems to be cute and fun but prisons are becoming crime post grad schools because allmost vocational training has become eliminated and because of the dehumanizing treatment.
I am not criticizing guards. They seem to be doing the best they can with what is available.

I've visited both for years. Unsurprisingly, I've seen brand-new jail facilities leterally destroyed in a matter of months. Also watched prisoners riot because we served them only one glass of orange juice in the morning. As a deputy sheriff, OJ was a treat for my kids.

I'm thinking you should take prisons off your places to volunteer. Go to soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Save your bleeding heart for the true people in need.

Sign me up. They are taken care of better than our people really in need. I say farm out our prison system to Turkey. It would cost a lot less and the prisoners would be treated like prisoners not hotel guests.
