I had a V5000 and it did a so-so job for many years. But now I have a VTech 5 phone system that has smart blocking. It gives you two options: 1). Every unknown caller that calls is told that they have to hit # for the call to be put through.. 2). They have to announce themselves and then the system will play that announcement for you and you can accept or reject the call. I use (1) and it seems to stop all spam calls yet allows valid calls with a human to hit #. I can't remember my last spam call. But I also use 1-voip.com as my voip provider ( about $12/mon and they route calls through nomorobo which filters a few, but not many spam calls. I have no stake in any products mentioned.
Should also mention that the VTech system has the usual ALLOW/BLOCK lists so you can let known callers get thru without the #

Surely you don't deny them the opportunity to help you. I never block those calls. They are so much fun. I try to see how long I can keep THEM tied up with useless crap.
Just yesterday a caller told me he had a new Ford Bronco and a cashiers check for me. I might have missed that call if I had blocking. He hasn’t delivered them yet. Maybe tomorrow, probably Monday.
I set my iPhone to "do not ring or vibrate" if a caller is not in my address book. At the caller's end, they can leave a voicemail message if it is a legitimate call. I can see all the numbers, incoming and outgoing, and where they are from should I want to call any back. This stops approx. 6 bogus calls per day.
What I get now is a variety of text messages from politicians wanting donations. Can't block those, but can ignore them.

My iPhone and Verizon divert calls form numbers not in my contact list to phone the answering function on the iPhone. Many of the spam calls try to fool you by using numbers from my Area Code, 917. Then i block all numbers from 917.
The biggest problem I have is dealing with calls from my medical group, Mt Sinai. Every office has numerous numbers which I have to add to a singular contact; MtSinai, so they get through.
I’m also on the national Do Not Call list which most spammers ignore.

You have reached the telephone number of a Federal Law Enforcement Officer. You must delete this number, never call this number again and never share it with anyone. This is your only warning. You will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law .

Legalities aside, I doubt an hourly worker at a call center would care about that. They probably get all sorts of strange come-backs. What I hate is the thought that I might be hanging up on a legitimate call.

Yes, but they seem to sense when I sit down for dinner to call. Then I stand up and by the time I get to a phone it has rung 4 times and they are no longer there. I guess that's how their auto dialing programs are set up. If I'm at my desk and answer on the first ring, there is no one there, as again, they have set up their programs not to waste their pitch person's time by waiting on line for a couple of rings. Maddening! I'm thinking I'll buy that call blocker on Amazon that popped up in the link near the beginning of this post.
I have slowly become antisocial. I hate a majority of people. I don’t wish to be in a discussion with other people. LOL!
Usually there is a delay because the scammers are trying to wring out the last of the other "suckers" money.
I wait until someone comes on the line then start my lines: "The body is ready for extraction. The cops don't know about this yet, so hurry up. You have the address." Click!

If there's a live person on the call, I'll ask them to hold a bit while I finish a task. You can guess how long before I return to the call.

I have a wireless phone/answering machine that requires the caller to put in a pound sign to get through if they are not in the phone's directory. Since most of these start off as a robocall, this rarely ever happens. I've only had two telemarketers get through in the last year and only one stated on the phone long enough for me to answer.

I like your response. I'm afraid I tend to opt to be nasty and then feel a little guilty about it afterwards.
By the way, I too have a VTech system. Use the option on it to have caller state their name only if it's someone who knows me or a company I do business with. Actually works pretty well. Occasionally someone doing a "cold call" chooses to ignore the instructions and put themself through (which is when I choose to respond to their disregard for following directions with nastiness).
