The 50mm lens suggested is inexpensive, sharp and good in low light. A good "walkabout" zoom for this camera is the one shown in this link. This one was sold, but you find examples of this lens being sold used by dealers and on eBay for $100-$200. It has often been my go to lens on my DSLRs. It has proven itself.

If I were in your shoes the 28-105 Nikon lens would be my choice. The 50mm f1.8 is an excellent optic but with the zoom you have more choices when it comes to focal length distances and the 28-105 is sharp and an excellent walk around lens.

The best inexpensive lens…prime or zoom?
1. Prime- 50mm f1.8
2. Zoom- Af-d 28-70 f3.5-4.5

I have a 28-105 I maybe willing to part with if you are interested. I have the pouch and I believe the manual but not the box. Of course I would want to ck it out before selling it. If interested Pm me. I use to have a 8008 and sold it for N90s which I still have.

I was going to suggest the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G lens but the N8008s doesn't AF an AF-S lens and with G lenses it only work in S and P mode. No A or M mode.

For inexpensive you can't beat the Nikon 28-80mm f:3.3-5.6g

Very well reviewed and maybe $40 from KEH. I have two...super sharp and lightweight.

Without an aperture ring, this lens limits you to the Program and Shutter Priority modes on this camera. It is useable, but if you want Aperture Priority or Manual, you need a lens with an aperture ring like the 28-105 I suggested.

You're correct, of course. I incorrectly remembered the capabilities/functions of that generation of Nikon film bodies. I had the command dial of my N75 in mind by mistake.

I went to Alaska recently and only wanted to take one lens. I bought their 28-200mm. It was wonderful!

You would want to buy the D version of the lens with the aperture ring for this camera. The only issue is the 6 ft minimum focusing distance. The G version is smaller and lighter, but G lenses on this camera will limit you to the P and S modes.
