The link below is a short article about the German photographer Boris Eldagsen who won the Sony World Photography Award and refused the prize on the grounds that he used an artificial intelligence image generator to create his submission.

The other night I was going through Facebook and there was a video of a large truck pulling a trailer with a huge log down an extremely steep hill. Several things about the truck, tires in the dirt and other things didn’t quite look right. Then the conifer trees behind the truck suddenly went from an apparent positive color to a negative color, jumping like that twice. AI no doubt.

Next was a huge mobile crane crossing a rickety wooden bridge. It was a very poorly done AI with obvious flaws on the bridge deck, water around the tires and so on.

And then came a photo of two hot Asian chicks scantily clad. They looked pretty good to me but I noticed the ends of their fingers didn’t look right, kind of like the end of a burning cigar. And then I noticed that there were 2 chicks but 5 hands in the image!

I’ve lost all faith in Facebook as well as hot Asian chicks. What else is there to live for when images of big trucks, big trees and beautiful women are all fake?

Should be in "Olde News" section.
UHH needs an Olde News section.
Or maybe a "Black Hole" section.

There is something that I cannot understand, if he knew his image was AI generated why in the world did he submit it.

His reason is in the interview linked in the opening post of this topic.

It takes something or someone to do such a thing to prove what a load of rubbish AI is.

I did an experiment 2 weeks ago with verbal AI. Why? Because I read something about crooks using it to steal from people. After a couple days of teaching AI my voice and personality I had AI call my best friend. He thought he was talking to me the entire 16 minute conversation. I then called my boss and 2 other friends and lastly my mother. Only one friend thought something was amiss. The warning to you all is be careful always.

The story does say a whole lot about the supposed quality of results from Sony ....

If Sony returns images of two people with five hands, I think I’ll stick with my Nikon.

Whenever all the pointless AI "controversy" is history, then Id agree with your puzzlement. But in the very midst of such nonsense is was the perfect disruption, a really great move.
