Huh? Do you mean you have a gun and ammo and want to deactivate, or just in general?

Being from a family of h****rs and fishermen and having worked part-time in the industry for 10 years, long ago, I suggest if you have a gun and/or ammo you want to get rid of you just call a local gun store and ask if they will buy or accept the stuff. Or call the PD and ask if they will take it off your hands. Depending on the department, they will either destroy it, use it, add it to department inventory or sell it and use the money to augment their budget. An antique or rare ammo for one can often give a small department a decent boost. We once had an elderly man come in who had inherited a collection from a relative. He was going to give them to his local PD, but one officer looked at the guns and sent him to my friend's store. It was a collection of a half dozen "Old West" rifles and pistols in uncommon calibers with ammo that brought the man and his wife over $30K when we sold it all to a collector on consignment for him. A very nice boost for their budget.

Depending on what the gun is, there are other choices. An antique might be accepted by a museum. Some of those can be very valuable and if in a rare caliber the ammo can be valuable also.

But if you have some ammo and want to render it inert, well depending on how well it is made, one way is to drop the cartridges into a container of oil. Some penetrating oil like WD-40 or similar is best. If the oil can penetrate, it will almost certainly render the powder and/or primer inert.

When a PD contracted my friend to destroy guns our gunsmith would strip all parts from the receiver and then cut the receiver in half and put it in with broken and scarp parts that he periodically took to a small steel mill where they melted and recycled the parts as metal. Those stripped off parts got used for repairs.

What do you mean “useless?” Even if you crushed it I guess it could be used as a paper weight. But if you are asking if there is a legal/practical way to rid the country of currently owned firearms I would say emphatically, no. Even California, in an attempt to feel like they are doing something that resembles “sensible gun legislation” passes laws obviously written by legislators or aids that know nothing about firearms or the complexities of what compels an individual to perpetuate the unthinkable. As an example, they pass an assault rifle ban. You know that insidious looking weapon of mass destruction but the legislation as written removes certain features and this is what remains. This is an example of a legal rifle that can still be purchased under the assault rifle ban:

Why would anyone want to do that? Even if you are anti gun which I know you are, do you really, you know, HONESTLY think it would stop violent crime with firearms?

Take a good look at your own Left Wing party who is doing everything it can to lessen the penalties for violent crimes, who doesn't even charge offenders for violent crimes in many cases these days. Take a specific look at the i*****l a***ns who beat up NYC police officers and were immediately released. Can you honestly tell us that was a good idea to release those violent offenders? What about the morale of the NYC police officers, all of them, not just those who were beaten up. Where is the support from the city there work for? It is non existent and you know it. Imagine if you were a NYC police officer knowing if you were beaten up or shot on the job you would have no support from the higher ups all the way up to the Mayor's office. Pretty F'd up idea isn't it?

Rather than do all you can to diminish the right of We the People to keep and bear firearms perhaps you should use common sense and insist on more severe penalties for violent offenders, longer prison/jail sentences to keep these violent offenders locked up where they cannot hurt the people.

My Pisces friend.. I began by asking/wondering how to make current ammo useless. You asked why so I'll tell you... but like you I'd like to off subject (border crossers, Police) The FAR left like the FAR right doesn't want to outlaw guns. They don't want to be defenseless against their opposites.

As to why, I want something to end the easy murdering of innocents.

That would be Aquarius. Every metric shows the Left DOES want to outlaw firearms. Maybe not every single Left Winger but those in power are on record as wanting to CONTROL the usage of firearms, ALL firearms, not just the semi auto rifles and handguns. But of course that argument was settled waaaaaay back in 1789. How on earth did you on the Left miss that important piece of legislation?

Surely you know Art as I have mentioned it numerous times and you could look it up yourself, murders by use of a knife outnumber those murders committed by rifles of all types and that includes the so called assault type rifles too.
Tell us then what you on the Left plan to do about those murderers/violent crime perpetrators who use knives to commit violent crimes. Will you outlaw knives of all types? How will that work out? Here is a hint. It ain't gonna work well.

The Left Wing idea of outlawing assault type rifles is about as stupid as taking away my vehicle because a number of people drive while intoxicated. Of course those who actually drive while intoxicated don't give a damn and will do as they choose anyway. Same with criminals. Taking away my firearms has no effect on criminals except they laugh their asses off at the i***tic attempts of the Left to take away my firearms. I have personally spoken to maximum security inmates both male and female about gun control and the effect it has on criminal behavior. The overall comment(s) by violent inmates is for you to do wh**ever you like. They just don't give a s**t. They are prison inmates. They commit violent crimes for a living. That is what they do. Some/many murder people just for fun to see what it feels like to take a human life. They laugh at you thinking taking my firearms will somehow affect them in the slightest. They don't usually buy firearms, they steal them by the dozens on occasion by breaking into armories, sporting goods stores and so on. But some of our mass k**lers have purchased their firearms completely legally and going through all the hoops forced on us by the government. Yup, passed the background check too. Yet sometime after that they got pissed off enough to k**l someone. Many get pissed of in a Road Rage condition and then k**l a number of people. Remember the Christmas parade, remember in Canada where a driver k**led a number of people. In Santa Barbara, CA back in the 1970's a woman divorcing her husband was purposely run over and k**led while jogging by her husband driving a car as the murder weapon. Taking guns/outlawing some guns does not work and yet you on the Left insist on doing the very same stupid thing thinking it will work this time.

Isn't that sort of like you Left Wingers pushing for Socialism in America knowing it has never once worked in any other society?
