I have two V600 scanners, and Epson made a change between them. One change was good, and one was bad.
First the good change. My scanner is sitting sideways, so I have to reach to the left under the cover to raise it. The older scanner has a small area in the center to grip the lid. That meant I had to reach farther to open it. The new one extended that gripping area along the entire side, so I can lift it from the near the edge.
The bad change: The older scanner has a regular ON/OFF switch, with a "1" and a "0" printed on it, so it's easy to see whether it's turned on or off. For some reason, they put a simply push button in its place. Push on and push off. By looking at the switch, there is no way to tell if it is turned on or off. I have to get up and look around at the front of the scanner to see if the light is lit. Maybe the new switch cost $0.02 less.
All changes should be for the better.

I've had a v750 for years with the same "bad" switch. Maybe it's the orientation I have it set up in, but it's no sweat to see if it's on or off. I just leave it on anyway, lol...

Mine is actually the 550 and works perfectly with Epson software under Win11
Of course. Microsoft still has a way to support 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows 11. Digital ICE is all 32-bit.
Apple ceased support for 32-bit applications COMPLETELY when MacOS 10.15.x Catalina came out 10/07/2019. So Digital ICE Mac will not run on any MacOS later than that. The current version is MacOS 14.3.1 Sonoma (FIVE full versions after Apple dropped 32-bit support).
If you have an INTEL Mac capable of running an obsolete, dangerous, off-the-Internet version of MacOS (10.6 through 10.14 Mojave) that still supports 32-bit software, it will still run Digital ICE. On 10.13 and 10.14, you may have to jump through hoops to make it install (i.e.; bypass Apple's nag warning about 32-bit software), but it should run.
The V600 is still functional on the latest Macs, but you have to use Epson Scan 2 or Silverfast 9. Epson Scan 2 does not include support for any of the Digital ICE features, because they were never written as 64-bit code. SilverFast 9 is 64-bit and Apple Silicon compatible.
This is annoying, of course. But it is hardly a reason to use Windows if you don't already.

I think you got it right above. If there is a choice between a change that is good for the customer or one that is good for the corporate bottom line, which do you think will be implemented?
If the change is good for the customer, that should translate into increased sales which would be good for the corporate bottom line.
It's not always "Either - Or."

I'm in that position right now with a lot of old, outdated lighting gear. I'd just give it away if I could find anyone around here to take it. We often donate unused stuff to local thrift stores.
After I sold my woodshop, I had a lot of hand tools I would never use again, and I took them to a flea market where I sold all but a couple of them because I was not looking to profit from them. I got a few bucks back and they're all out of my hair.
Large things care difficult to unload. I have roof racks and a bicycle that will have to find a local buyer.

Especially esoteric items like old studio strobes...

Place a mirror facing the front of the scanner. Maybe that will help you determine if the scanner is on or off, without getting up off your butt.

I know you can put anything on eBay, but I wonder who would pay the shipping on these very heavy items. I know I won't...
A few years ago, I purchased the Epson V39 for around $99. It does everything I need, i.e. Jpg, PDF, etc etc. I use is as a copy machine along with scanning applications. At first, it did not support Win11 and I had to do a work around. Now, it does support Win11. I just checked B&H and they say the V39 no longer available but the newer version, V39II, is and $99.
