I bought some small bags of dry dog food, and each bag contained a small bag labeled "Oxygen Absorber." It's about half the size of one of those bags of desiccant packed with many items. Interesting.

Of course there are hasty bugs that grow when O2 is not present, I believe Botulism is caused by one. If I remember the amount of toxin that would fit in a soda can could if properly distributed kill every single person on earth.

In fact if you fill a container with CO2 pouring from the top it would displace the oxygen because it's heavier than oxygen.

Stromatolites were the first life on earth, 4+billions years ago. And we didn't have an O2 atmosphere until quite a bit later.

I suspect the reason for the O2 absorber is because critters need it to live but not on your dog food.

The purpose of the oxygen absorber is to keep the dog food from going rancid. Rancidity is caused by oxidation of the fat, no oxygen, no rancid flavor, doggy eats food.

Now there's the basis for a good sci-fi movie. It would involve a company that produces oxygen absorbers. If they worked too well, it would be bad for those who rely on oxygen.
