Full disclosure, this is actually my wife's PBGV (Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen) which is a small, rough coated, French ,rabbit hound. While still relatively rare in the USA( we brought our first one over from Europe in the early 1970s), a PBGV won Best In Show at the large classic Westminster Dog Show last year. Her name is Patsy Cline and she was imported from Finland as a puppy. Yes they are real hounds and do "bay" and howl frequently as she is doing in the second image.
