Made the jump from a D7100 to D850 shortly after the D850 was available. Dug in my heels for a long time, wanted nothing to do with any mirrorless cameras. Got invited to a private evening at a local brick and mortar camera store, the guest speaker was a Nikon ambassador who had been using a Z8 for a while; that evening was enlightening and informative especially with the possibility of my going to Alaska slowly coming into focus. Got an offer I could not refuse, both to go to Alaska for the first time for me and to take a Z8 with. I had only two DX lenses for the D7100, an 18-70 kit lens and an 18-200 DX VR. For the D850 I had two of Nikon's trinity, a 24-70 and the latest iteration 70-200. I used both the D850 and Z8 in Alaska, multiple images from both cameras have been enlarged to 32" wide x 18" high. I do not own any Z lenses yet. For all that has been written about the image quality produced by Z lenses, I question whether they would have delivered sharper images than the F mount Nikkors of either the D850 or Z8. In addition, I have used both my F mount lenses on my D7100 for both stills and video. Until I get some kind of windfall, I have no intention of getting Z mount lenses for the foreseeable future. My opinion based on real time results.

THAT !! would be rather astounding.

The lesson here is that the UHH clown car is not necessarily better than that camera store clerk. Its perfectly possible that the OPs DX lens is an old shaft drive AF lens that cannot AF on the FTZ converter. Photos attached.

If the OP will post pix of the ID nomenclature on his DX lens, or a good clear pic of the lens flange, this particular issue would be settled.

What would have been amazing was not to mix units - the frame size that the Z6 would default to with a DX lens is 24mm x 16mm (3936 x 2624 pixels). The most common myth I hear is that a DX lens won't work - they probably will work, but some maybe with limited functionality!

The time is always right to do what is right and buy a mirrorless camera.

Attempting to go from Nikon D7200 to Nikon Z6 and totally confused about what I’ve been told. Person at Photo shop says i absolutely cannot use my current Nikon DX lens on the Z6. Others say i can use them with the Z mount attachment but i will lose resolution and it will be cropped differently. So, what’s the truth?

If you go on to Nikon’s website, all your questions will be answered… right from the source.

If you have DX lenses that you want to keep, think of going to theNikon DX mirrorless.
I have the Z50, nice camera. Not as advanced as the other full frame models, but it works great.

I did that a few years ago. I jumped from a D7200 and D700 to a Z6 w/24-70 f4 Z S lens. I only had 1 f mount DX lens. The camera adjusted to DX automatically. I had all other full frame lenses that worked great using the FTZ adapter.

I did not like the way the DX lens worked. I sold it and used the 24-70 f4. A 24-70 f2.8 is what I used mostly on my DSLRs.

I still have my Z6 but I added a z8 this year. I no longer have any F-Mount lenses now either. I traded or sold for Z glass. It has taken a few years, but I am really pleased.

My only recommendation would be to see if you could sell the DX lenses and replenish using KEH to buy used z lenses or full frame F-Mount. There are also 3rd party lenses like Tamron.

I wish you success. I hope this was some help.

The D7200 is DX and the Z6 is a full frame, so unless I’m mistaken you won’t be able to get the intended use from your DX lenses. I think the photos will be distorted.

They won’t be distorted. The Z6 will automatically shift to DX mode. It is a pretty significant reduction in resolution. I cannot remember anymore.

I have a Z6ii, and several DX lenses (for my D500).

Assuming the lenses work correctly with your D7200, you absolutely *can* use the DX lenses on the Z6 with an FTZ adapter, but the camera will automatically switch to DX mode, so you will not get the full 20.9 MP resolution (off the top of my head I *THINK* the DX resolution on the Z6 is 12 MP).
