"American Pie," by Don McLean, is a fantastic accomplishment. Our ukulele group is working on performing it. Asked by one interviewer what the song meant, McLean said, “It means I never have to work again.”

I've always hated that song. It's monotonous and the lyrics, to me, are juvenile. (Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry. That's deep.) I know I am probably the only one in America who sees it that way......oh, well. Have fun playing it, though, Jerry. It sounds really easy to play.

I'm with you on that. I saw him play it live at Davidson College in the mid-1970s. His other material was better, but not as "hook-y," and therefore, forgettable.

I'd rather watch three teen sisters perform a rock opera they wrote about a murder. (Not kidding! They did.)

(Caution: listening to these kids is habit forming! The drummer just won the Drumeo 2023 Rock Drummer of the Year Award.)

As they say, to each his own. IMHO it’s a terrific tune

"I know I am probably the only one in America who sees it that way" Definitely! It's about the popular music figures and events of the day, and the plane crash that killed three popular performers on Feb 3, 1959.

When someone asked the author what the song meant, he said, "It means I'll never have to work again."

Unfortunately, it is not easy to play on the uke.

I feel exactly the same way. However, despite being so banal it managed to achieve earworm status.
