So much bad advice in this thread. The guy is clearly on a budget. My question would be “what do you expect to gain by going FF?” With no compelling reasons for that I’d suggest sticking to DX. Virtually any more recent DX would be an upgrade. Even then this is 2024 and any DSLR is old tech. He could get a Z50 with the two lens kit and the FTZ adapter for less than the D780 he’s saving for.

Get a D500 and a sigma 300-800mm f5.6 constant aperture and a good tripod and gimbal head. The lens and the camera will let you crop at a minimum.

Excellent! If you’re gonna give bad advice I say go all out!

My first choice $ no object, D850 and 80-400 lens, second choice would be D500 with the 200-500, For the record I have the D850 and the AF-D 80-400, but I use the 80-400 solely on my D300S. Cuz I'm cheap and I don't want to damage expensive equipment on my travails

Money’s no object and you’re going with the D850? Can I interest you in some NFT’s?

I just want to make a comment about military planes in the UK. I've been in the north of the UK many times. Military planes/pilots train over civilian areas in the Lake District. You may be enjoying tea outdoors in Grasmere or Keswick when you hear the whine of a jet and then see the jet go screaming over your head at barely more than treetop level. It happened to me at least a dozen times in my travels. Military planes don't fly that low over civilian areas in the U.S. I was in Keswick once, and an old WWII era fighter plane did a few circles around the town before moving on. I was driving down the B6259 south of Kirkby Stephen when a C130 followed by a P51 Mustang went right across the roadway in front of me. The last thing to mention was the time I went to an outdoor market in Penrith (if that's what it would be called there) and came across a woman selling some really fantastic shots of planes flying through the fells of the Lake District. Perhaps she knew the spots most likely to have a view of the planes, but her method apparently was just like shooting birds. Sit and wait.

Sorry, some of the posts in this thread are giving me a headache.

I had a D500 which I used a lot for aviation - I tend to shoot commercial jets landing and departing from DFW airport in Dallas. I ultimately switched to the Z6ii (and I also have a Z7ii) and am using a 100-400 Tele (Z mount). I have no issues with departing or landing jets, everything from A380’s to Regional jets. I love the FX format rather than the DX, although the extra reach on the DX was nice, but with the lens at 400mm, it isn’t a problem.

Are you saving too for FX lenses? If you don't have full-frame lenses, you're wasting your money on a full-frame camera, as the FX camera will need to operate in DX mode with a DX lens. Your Sigma is fine on an FX body, but the question remains: what other FX lenses?

Regarding the D780 vs D750, they're both 24MP FX cameras and the D780 was pretty much a waste of time by Nikon, ignored by most of their customers. Look at a used D750 if a D850 is out of your price range.

You probably should be looking at a D500 or D7500 for your airshow needs, the more logical upgrade from a DX D5100.

Look into the Z cameras. They are worth the money.
