A friend gave me a Tamron 18-270 f3.5-6.3 lens, he's going mirrorless. So far I'm really impressed with the build quality, and its super quiet. Anyone have some pros and cons on it?

I have the latest model, the 18-400 (Canon EF) I'm happy with it, though I rarely use it as I have a full complement of faster, more normal (as in 3-1 zoom ratio) lenses. Bought it for the times when I want to go light. Turns out that's not very often.

I have that lens, and I really like it. It's my everyday go-to lens on my Canon T5i. If you have seen my photos here, most of them in the last year or so were taken with that lens. I find it very versatile.

I have that lens, Canon mount. I took it on 2 European trips, and it worked well and was the only lens I needed.

I cannot comment directly on the 18-270. But I have 4 other Tamrons all the G2 version and am delighted with each one.

I had the Tamron 18-270, then their 16-300, and now their 18-400, all used on my D7100. All have worked well for me as my primary lens due to the range covering most all my needs.

I

My other Tammy's are the 24-70 and 150-600, both G2's. Excellent lenses. EF mount.

My first were back in the 1970's or so.... Adaptall 300 f/2.8 and 80-200 f/2.8 used on my FD Canon T90 ... still have the zoom... haven't used it since the early 1980's when I switched to EOS... it developed a bad fungus had it cleaned, it came back.... keeping it as a memento, not worth trying to sell...

The best lens is the one you have in your camera at the time of making an image.
Enjoy your new tool.

I have had many Tamrons in the past. The latest one I bought had a tight spot mid range when I bought it.It slowly got worse. I sent it in and got it repaired under warranty. It lasted about 6 moths and has gone bad again and of course it's out of warranty.

I bought a Tamron 18-270 for my Nikon D7100, that combination was used when I did my first trip ever to the Pac NW, Oregon specifically. I got it for its range, a little more than the Nikkor 18-200 I had been using. I was pleased with the images for a while until I really got into post processing in Lightroom. To my disappointment, too many of my images were actually soft. I put that Tamron on my old Nikon D80 and there it still is. I offered the D80/Tammy 18-270 combo to my daughter and she still uses it even though at the time I offered her my D300. She is OK with the images. I have had two other Tamron lenses, their first generation 150-600 which loved to hunt for focus lock and usually delivered about half the time even under near ideal shooting conditions; and I had their 24-70 2nd generation for my D850, that lens got returned to B&H a little over a week after I got it. From that point on I use only Nikkor lenses on all my Nikon bodies.

I keep an 18-270 on one of my Sony A77s and love it. I can't really tell any difference in it and the Sony 16-250 that I have on another A77.

Why would you look a gift horse in the mouth? Try it and see what you think--and then tell us how you like it.

I had the 18-250 canon version. I found it to be good, but not great.
