Check You Walgreen's Receipt

From the news - Walgreen's has been charging sales tax on non-taxable items. If you buy several items, it can be tricky figuring out if the sales tax you paid is correct. Also, knowing what is taxed and what isn't can also be a challenge.

This is the third time the pharmacy has been caught overcharging. What does this say about their business practices? Business columnist Larry Edelman explains.

I used to go to Walgreens for my prescriptions but they were getting so slow I gave up on them years ago and have been going elsewhere. But lately "elsewhere" is getting slow, also. Might have to change again.

I don't have to go anyplace for my prescriptions. I get them mail order.

All the Walgreens I frequent have bar code reading cash registers so if they are charging tax on non taxable items it is programmed into their computers.

Their pharmacy has separate registers from the front checkout counters.

Its all in the hands of the computers, and goes to the outstretched hands behind the machines.

A mix-up in their computer system? Must be complex, with different things being taxed in different states, and maybe in some counties and cities, too, all with different rates.

Right. So, someone programmed the system to charge tax on non-taxable items.

In NY, there's a law that food stores cannot charge more than the price posted on the shelf. If they do, the customer gets the item for free, and he receives twice the price of the item as a refund.

In November my wife and I made an appointment at Walgreens' for our RSV vaccine. We got there a little early and checked in. After waiting a half hour past our appointment time I inquired about the wait. There was no one ahead of us. I spoke to the pharmacist who told me he had 400 prescriptions ahead of me. I swear that is what he said. I told them to cancel our appointment since I didn't have time to wait for him to do 400 prescriptions. I am still scratching my head over this one. I actually filed a complaint with Walgreens corporate and they replied that someone would get back to me. That was on the 29th of November and we have heard nothing. BTW, we came home made appointments the next at Krogers where we were promptly given the vaccines. Needless to say, I will never darken Walgreens doors again.
