A 22-year-old college student was walking home at 5:30 PM, walking south in the southbound lane, when he was struck by a vehicle and killed. What a shame. I hope they find the driver. This happened about ten miles from me.

I live in a college town and I find it incredible how many students will step off the curb right into traffic while looking at their phones. I'm surprised that they aren't hit on a daily basis.

Yes, and not only teenagers. I hate driving through the parking lot at Sam's Club because of the people looking at their phones. I am so glad that I haven't gotten addicted to my phone. It's a "tool" that I use occasionally.

Even worse are drivers using their phones, and they are easy to spot. Their speed varies, and they drift back and forth in the lane.

How true! Like most states, New Hampshire has a law against using a cell phone while driving (we call ours a "distracted driving" ban) but I've never seen it enforced even though it's easy to spot such a driver as you noted. Since it's easy to check the phone records to see if a driver was on a phone while in an accident, I suppose it would be good to use in a lawsuit if you were suing someone who hit you. I wonder if the insurance companies have done this as a legitimate way to get out of paying a claim? In fact, do insurance companies refuse to pay for claimed damages if the insured motorist was DUI and the cause of the accident?

Right, about the phone records. Good question about a DUI crash. I can't imagine an insurance company paying for someone driving illegally.

I wonder how CB radios fit into the "distracted driving" category.

Interesting...
Never had a problem for all the years I had one.
But then I concentrate on driving. Too many idiots out there. More now than back then!

Two kids on bicycles crossed an 8 lane road against the light with their heads buried in their phones. Two cars barely missed them. They had no clue. I wonder about their life expectancy.

One doesn't have to be smart to go to college. All it takes is parents who pay the tuition.

Yes, the drivers are worse than in the past.

Some seemingly don't care.
Some get caught.....sooner rather than later.

Well, it's different in NY. Students must pass an entry exam. If a student leaves high school dumb, that's pretty much the end of the road for him.

MOST colleges are like that, still I hope.

Maybe they only require SAT or ACT results now....
