Europe 2023 Summer - Photo Preview 11 - Croatia: Fascinating Coastal Towns in Istria
Another highlight on this trip was our visit to the Istrian Peninsula in the northwest corner of Croatia. While we previously visited Croatia a couple of times, we never set foot on the Istrian peninsula, presumably because it is a bit out of the way of the direct routes leading north to south. But this time, after our overnight stop in Trieste, Istria was close by and we were intrigued by the images we had seen of this area. Our main interest in Croatia was actually to visit again the Plitvice Lakes National Park, thus we cobbled together a route that brought us through Istria, then followed the Dalmatian Coast, which we had driven a couple of times before, down to the city of Zadar and then up to the Plitvice Lakes National Park. All of the towns and locations I am presenting in this posts were new to us and we always love to discover new places.
A short note and links for more information on the places presented with the photos below:
ROVINJ - This was the most picturesque and intriguing place (the j at the end is silent in pronunciation), a popular town of 14,000+ inhabitants, situated on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula. The old core of the town was situated originally on an island which became connected to the mainland in 1763 by filling in the channel. The first 5 images present this town. -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PulaMOTOVUN - The medieval town Motovun, situated in the northern center of Istria, grew up on the site of an ancient city called Castellieri, it is situated 270m / 886 ft above sea level with houses scattered all over the hill. -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MotovunOPATIJA - Geographically still on the Istrian peninsula, Opatija is a traditional Croatian seaside resort on the Adriatic Sea above the Dalmatian Coast. A fashionable resort in the 19th century, it is dotted with Habsburg-era villas. -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpatijaDALMATIAN COAST - Dalmatia is one of the four historical regions of Croatia, located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. Dalmatia forms a narrow belt stretching from the island of Rab in the north to the Bay of Kotor in the south. 79 islands and about 500 islets run parallel to the coast. My last two pictures in this set present this coastline and a view of a few of these many islands. -
