For Curmudgeon and Robert Jerl Perkins. These were taken awhile back at a ranch near Falfurrias, Texas. I hope you like them.

When I would call them up to the farmhouse yard, I sometimes felt sort of guilty. Here I had them all ready for romance, and they found a kid reading and sometimes an ambitious farm cat or the dog barking at them.
But they sometimes got revenge. Have you ever been walking through a pasture, go to step over a big clump of grass and had a covey burst out of the clump like a bomb going off under your foot? Once during quail season it happened to me. I was aiming my shotgun at another clump I had seen one fly into. I fired a shot in reflex, but my buddy never even tried for one, he was laughing so hard at me. Not only that, but I think I also set a new one-foot straight up high jump record. I got so much air time, I should have gone to the airport and signed up for helicopter pilot training.
Beautiful set, Bubba! It has been years since I have seen or heard one.

That's a funny story, Jerry. Even when you are expecting them to flush, the suddenness of it is always surprising. And somehow, they know the best direction to fly to avoid getting shot. Add some wind into the equation and they are even more difficult. As both a gun hunter and photographer, I know the chance of getting a quality image of a flushing quail with camera is more challenging than shooting at them with a shotgun. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
