On a side-trip from Switzerland, we spent 10 days down on the Greek island of Corfu, partially with the family of our son. While we repeatedly visited Greece in the past, this was our first visit to the island of Corfu. Corfu is the largest and northernmost Greek island on the Ionian Sea, about 120 km / 75 miles east of the coast of Italy. Moreover, it is located in very close proximity to the country of Albania in the Balkans (3 km / 2 miles). Since Albania was one of the 5 European countries that we had not yet set foot in, we used this opportunity for a day-trip by boat to the town of Sarandë in Albania and visited its nearby Butrint National Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This marked my 121st country visited, we were quite impressed with the little we saw and intend to return shortly, possibly even this year, for a more in-depth visit of this country.

We stayed in two different locations on Corfu: First for 5 days with the family of our son at a nice beach location on the northern coast in the town of Acharavi, and then just the two of us for another 5 days in the small town of Kontokali, a major harbor for yachts located some 10 km / 6 miles north of Corfu Town.

The images in this set cover vistas in the capital city "Corfu Town", then also on the northern coast where our first hotel was located and in-between two photos from Albania.

The following links to articles in Wikipedia provide more information on Corfu and Butrint National Archaeological Park, should you be interested:

Butrint: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butrint_National_Park

This set concludes the presentations from our spring trip - even though this trip lasted 77 days, it mainly concentrated on family visits and due to the weather was not overly productive for photography. The following sets starting tomorrow will cover our summer trip, where we had a much more ambitious travel program and where the weather was more conducive to photography, even though I have to say that due to the extreme heat we experienced during most of this summer trip, there were some nostalgic moments when we wished the cooler, more temperate climes from the spring trip to return!

Thank you Barbara for your appreciation of these images. I have to say, Barbara, you come up with some great questions that have me scurrying to the informational security blanket of Mr Google. My first reflex-thought was that no, I have never heard of a tsunami in the Mediterranean. But then I googled and - oh my goodness - yes tsunamies can and do happen in the Med! Apparently, about 10% of all tsunamis worldwide happen in the Mediterranean Sea and a large tsunami happens in the area about once a century. Generally though it is thought that the tsunamis in the Med are less devastating, as the water body is smaller, on the other hand, there is quite a lot of seismic activity in this area, just think of the repeated earthquakes in recent history in Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc. Great question Barbara - keep them coming!
