Downloaded it and forgot about it, here's my attempt anyway.
I went for the monochrome as well. So time back BOB told me to increase the contrast a bit before making your change to black and white so I gave it a go. Seems like it's an idea worth persuing.

Tonally the abbey is similar to its background. Colour would have helped differentiate the abbey from its background, but since you want to do away with colour you need to use brightness levels. Brightening the abbey and darkening the field would seem to be the preferred option. Apart from that it's not lacking contrast.

Much appreciatted R.G. Took your points on board and did a quick rehash. Selected the Abbey and made additional sharpening, brightness and a tad of contrast. Inverted the selection and darkened the rest, then swept over it with the blur brush. Got my separation but feel there's a lot more to be had, maybe have another go when that storm gets here Monday.
