But 1-2 minutes should be quite sufficient for the modem or router.

But not enough time for a coffee break. Coffee breaks are when you get those Ah Ha moments when you solve all your problems.

Every once in a great while our router gets funky and I unplug it for about 15 seconds.
Fixes the problem.
If your spinning beach ball is only for the internet, then above advice should work. If you close all applications, and re-start and still get the beach ball, then shut down and restart in Recovery disk mode
(Shut down, press Command + R and hold it down while you hit the power button to startup.
Keep holding until you see the recovery disk mode ..... choose Disk utility then select your Hard drive and disk first aid. It will run diagnostics and do some house cleaning.
If that does not fix it, call Apple
Good Luck

A spinning wheel on an iMac means the connection has not yet been made. That wheel will continue to spin unless you stop the attempt or the connection is made. You have not mentioned WHERE your log-in is failing. If your computer will not boot up your problem lies internally and you may want to call APPLE. If your computer boots but will not connect the problem lies with your internet provider. Your best hope would be to re-boot the modem and router.
Try going to other known places on the net.
ONE site may have temporary problems, 5+ sites and the problem lies between you and your ISP.
Your equipment or your ISPs equipment.
Can you reach the site with your phone on 4G?
