This is more than likely one of those stupid questions that nobody wants to even bother answering, but I'm new to all this and will blame my lack of experience. I get the concept of 1:1 being true macro etc, but what's the difference if the photo is cropped to the hilt, but looks good?
With the current state of sensor technology, we cannot take a normal photo, then enlarge & crop to "macro" proportions, without huge loss of resolution & detail. This also applies to "close-up" photography in the 1:10 to 1:4 magnification range.

Somewhere near 1:3 mag (1/3 life-size), it is possible to crop to 1:1 (life-size), but we cannot expect to enlarge image for printing or fill monitor, without resolution loss at this point. Much macro-photography is captured at higher mag than 1:2, then cropped minimally to 1:1 proportions.

Also, a macro lens is flat-field, as opposed to a curved-field common to all other photographic lenses. Enlarging lenses and projection lenses are also flat-field.

I strongly suggest that you read:

Thanks Nikonian72. I just got to wondering what all the fuss was about. Reading some of the posts in this thread, I felt I could cut the air with a knife. I'll read up on the thread you suggested so I will be up to speed. Cheers.

Hi Scoota, I'm glad that you've picked up on what Nikonian72 has to offer in this thread. As you will have gathered, I'm pretty new to macro photography so I take what Nikonian72 advises as the 'holy grail' of macro. I personally think that Nikonian72 does know it all for, those of us who are still battling to comprehend macro. You are right, though, about some of the posts, in my opinion it is just not necessary. Follow Nikonian72 and you can't go wrong! I look forward to seeing some of your contributions! Brian :D

Robbie7 has posted this thread: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-80446-1.html

His example proves my point stated above about exceeding limits of sensor resolution.

Hi Nikonian72 :D I know it's silly of me but it was a remark made to me, in a thread (not yours) that wound me up and along the way I have allowed it to become an issue for me. I have to be honest I have really only started taking an interest in Macro very recently, a cropped portion blown up to life size and beyond was good enough for me. anyway thanks for pointing out my post..I will look and learn.. Tom Shahan look out..lol :-D
