Michelin X-Ice

I bought a new Michelin X-Ice tire from Tire Rack because the current one has a slit in the sidewall. While bringing it to the installer today, I wondered if the new tire was made to rotate in the same direction and the damaged one. Of course it wasn't. The new one is for the passenger's side, but the old one is for the driver's side. I hope I can just exchange it for the correct one. At $181, I don't want to have to buy another tire.

Update: the tire is not asymmetrical, so they can go on either side.

I had that problem with the Porsche Boxster that I owned. All tires were directional.

I remember reading that the Corvette needed four different tires - front, rear, left, right - at one time, so you couldn't rotate them. I know that some cars (Tesla, for example) have different tires front and read.

Directional and asymmetrical make for a trick combination. When I take the snows off the cars, I label them for where they will go next winter.

Back in the day I bought a set of Michelin XAS for my Fiat 124 Spyder. Though you can use them on either side, the tire is not symmetrical. The tread is designed to have one side facing out, the other in. That message is molded into the tire sidewall along with all the other mfg info. Wouldn't you know, when they returned the car to me 3 of the four tires were backwards, so they had to remount them and rebalance. I was surprised this happened, since the shop featured Michelin tires...

There is no room in my Ferrari for four spare tires: directional and asymmetrical. The car came with a patch kit and 12v compressor. Has never been necessary. Luck?

Don, I hope that you kept them all going in the same direction all the time.😉

Also on the Porsche Boxster the rear tires were larger than the front tires!

Not unusual on high performance cars.
