A good image and illustration for a scary story.
Actually, Dire Wolves were 3' at the shoulder like modern grey wolves but stockier and with an outsize head. 25% heavier than a Grey at up to 150lbs.
Of course in stories and legends size tends to get a bit exaggerated in both directions.

No one ever accused the Grateful Dead of being great historians or paleontologists.
But it does make a good image for the storyline.
