Another beautiful Australian native, the Crested Pigeon. Also one of my favourites but then I love all birds.
If startled, the Crested Pigeon takes to the air with a characteristic whistling flight, and glides with down turned wings. The whistling sound is produced by the air passing over a modified primary feather on the wing. Upon landing, the pigeon swings its tail high in the air.
The Crested Pigeon is a stocky pigeon with a conspicuous thin black crest. Most of the plumage is grey-brown, becoming more pink on the underparts.
The wings are barred with black, and are decorated with glossy green and purple patches. The head is grey, with a pinkish-red ring around the eye.
Average size is 33cm and average weight is 207 grams.
When we were in the old house, I had 30 (exact number each day) come down to visit me every day at exactly 3pm. I never fed them enough to sustain them, just some wild birdseed mix for a snack. I even had a few special friends that I fed by hand.
If it was wet and cold, we all went into the laundry for snacks.
The males and females have similar plumage.
I loved this time.
They even got to recognise our cars and if we were away, when entered the neighbourhood, we could see them flying over to our house to wait on the roof for us.
Our neighbours always told us that when we were away they never saw any of them.
Obviously these crested beauties knew a pigeon when they saw one.
Beautiful sharp images, Ron. Our Mourning Doves make a whistling noise when the take off, too.
Amazing story and great photos.
Beautiful birds Ron, and friendly too it looks like
