I just lost a dear friend in his mid 40's with a wife and young children to a massive stroke. The man worked long hours and was overweight. If I listened correctly, his wife said that he had not addressed his high blood pressure and been complaining of severe headaches for the last few days. He had symptoms he ignored early saturday, argued with his wife about calling 911 and they only called 911 after he threw up. He collapsed before the EMS got there. He had 2 cardiac arrests on the trip to the ER. He never regained conscious.

Take care of yourself.

As a former FireMedic, I know the story well. Denial is one of the strongest words in the English language. And I should know better. I was sick a week ago and thought that I had bronchitis. It all started with walking pneumonia. Then my regular doctor took an x-ray and proclaimed the pneumonia was gone and only bronchitis was left. When I finally went to an ER (the VA was paying for it) the ER doc took an X-ray but he also took a CT scan The CT showed I now had double pneumonia. (Per the ER doc, it was not clearly visible on the X-ray). The morals of the story are it's always good to get a second opinion, and if your wife/gf wants you to go see help, DO IT. They may be seeing something that you are missing, or have chosen to ignore. Remember, doctors are not perfect. They often get too much blame and too much credit...

Along the same lines, my wife passed away last year from a stroke. After suddenly showing some unusual symptoms, arm and leg tremors, altered vision, I took her to the ER, but because she didn't have the usual symptoms (headache, crooked smile, partial paralysis, etc) of a stroke they thought he was having an allergic reaction and sent her home with some antihistamine tablets. It was only two days later that an ER doc thought of giving her a CT scan and discovered the stroke. As it turned out, the site of the stroke was not treatable. The lesson is if a person is suddenly showing any unusual signs or symptoms, an immediate trip to the ER is a small price to pay for being careful.

Carl, boy is that ever the truth. Carl, thank you for sharing your story, making my point, and so sorry for your loss!!! Sometimes you need to override the doctors and ask for a second opinion. Most good doctors will never be upset by this but rather welcome it. Remember, doctors often don't have all the answers!.

I will be 77 in April. In December 2015, I had an episode of chest pain that was determined to be NOT a heart attack (MI) but a cardiac catheterization was recommended. That procedure discovered I had two partially blocked vessels and bypass surgery was suggested. January 2016, I had the surgery and after was told I had a third vesel involved (100% blocked) but my body made a natural bypass for it. That made me give up the soda and I altereed my diet. I do try to eat more healthily, drink more water, and trying to do more walking/exercising. In a conversation last week with another gentleman about my age, he suggestd the philosophy of "Don't let the old man in."
