Question for z8 or z9 owners -- shutter speed

On my z7ii that I just sold to help for the z8, the shutter could be set for low shutter speed, high speed, and yet a higher speed. I often shoot 3 frame exposure brackets at .7 over/under. When I put in to have the z8 take a 3-shot bracket, it seems to do so at what was the low-speed setting on the z7. I wanted it to speed up so I set the speed at 30 fps. It reeled off about 10 or 12 shots before I could get my finger off the trigger! How do I speed up the 3-frame bracket for just 3 shots?

Never owned a Z7ii, but the Z8/Z9 should work in a similar manner.

Is 12 frames a 12-frame bracket or is it 3 or 4 3-frame brackets all shot in a 30 fps hurry ?

It looks like when I turn on the 30 fps that command overrides the bracket command. I just checked and the first shot I took has 30 identical shots with no bracketing. With the second shot, I was able to get my finger off the trigger more quickly but still got 16 identical shots. I'll have to do some research into this. I like to fire bracket shots quickly so the subject is approx. in the same position. Modern HDR programs will align pictures as long as they are relatively the same except for exposure. I know this is easily achieved with the camera mounted on a tripod and using a remote trigger, but often I like to handhold shots for ease of moving around. I would like to have the 30 fps speed but for only three bracketed shots.

On the Z8 you can bracket at continuous frame rates up to 20fps max. 30fps does not allow bracketing.

Thanks! I will attempt to set it at 20 fps and see if it will bracket the shots. I hope it will also stop at 3 frames since I do not want to bracket all 20 shots.

Ok, I just tried it. There does not seem to be a 20 fps. The dial goes from S to 3 to 10 to 30. I did set it at 10 and it worked. The shots were fast and it did stop at 3 with the shots bracketed. Thanks for putting me on the right track.

In the 'Custom Settings Menu' select - Shooting Display - select a1 'Continuous shooting Speed'. Here you can set the 'Continous High-speed' frame rate to either, 10, 12, 15 or 20fps. Once you have set this to 20, you will also see that in the 'i' menu under Release Mode for H

a2 is used to set the maximum shots per burst. E.g. if you want a bracket of 5 different exposures set this to 5.

A1 works as you mentioned. Please be aware the a1 sets the fps for everything, not just bracketing! This is why I have this available in My Menu. To control your bracketing work, use the BKT button on the top (left) of the camera. Best of luck.

I've tried it again and in 'High Speed burst' (say 20fps) with Bracketing ON, the number of frames taken with your finger on the button is limited at the number of frames set in Bracketing (e.g. either 3,5, 7 or 9).

But,

With respect to 'Custom setting Menu' Shooting Display a2 'Maximum Shots per burst' it is imperative that this is set at or above the number of frames that you wish to take in a bracketing sequence. If for example you have the Maximum Shots per burst set to 4 and want to take a bracketed sequence of 7 it will only take 4 of that sequence, recommencing the remaining 3 at the next press of the button.

Yes, I thought the fps on the dial on top of the camera would be the same as the one at a1. It isn't -- not sure why the fps on the dial goes 10-30-50-100 rather than a1 at 10-12-15-20. Maybe it is for video which I don't do. Anyway, thanks -- I set the fps at 20 in a1 and now I'm getting my 3-frame bracket very quickly. Works great now.
