This, as far as we knew, was the only way in or out of the favela. I photographed these two women just before we encountered those guys who insisted I not photograph people. As you can see, some of the model favelas are now located here.
Some favelian artwork. All the photos in this set from within the favela were taken with the single use film cameras as I described in my narrative. When we got home, I rephotographed with my digital camera.
Most people who come to Rio only see the favelas from the outside. What you are looking at is a fairly rare view ... at least at the time we were there. (There are probably tours now.)
As you can see, they do what they can to beautify where they live. It's called pride.
Down. Then up. Then down. Etc. That's the wife.

There doesn’t appear to be any streets or roads there. Is walking the only way to get in?
I was just thinking the same thing as Barbara about no streets. Really sharp photos!!!

I think that cars can get in there, but I'm not sure.

Hard to imagine ... especially moving in.
Gives new meaning to "packing them in". Any idea why no photos of people Mel?
