Have you considered the RP?
I have and it takes excellent pictures. Controls are simplified, but less than $900 when I bought it on a holiday sale.

I have a Canon 5D Mark IV and I love it. It serves me very well and I have no intention at this time for going mirrorless.

I apologize if my response would offend the OP. First of course I think only you know what you should buy. Everybody has different way to evaluate their own pros and cons. Second assume that I were you and I know that I want the R5 but I can't afford it then my choice is to buy nothing.

6D is better in low light than 6D II... Prob. cheaper also.

Sony A1 is hands down the best action camera on the market today. And I am basically a Nikon guy. There is just nothing better.

Perhaps consider renting each one and trying them on what you like to shoot. Seems it could be money well spent and you would then have the answer as to what fits you best.

Welcome to the forum! Only you know your budget; wanting and affording can often be at odds. Chances are you can find a suitable Canon that will do 90% of what the R5 can do for 40% of the cost. Best to start with the body you want and something like a Canon 24-105 f4 RF lens that will do for most of your shooting.

First...welcome to the forum. It can be a helpful place, but it is important to understand the strong biases here before spending money based on the answers you get. I do not use Canon equipment, but do have a couple of suggestions that may be helpful to you.

Folks here are pretty strongly biased towards cameras that cost a lot and that have the most pixels or that do the best in low light. I would suggest that you think about why you want a full frame camera. If it is "just because," that is fine. Just make sure that you and we understand that.

The most current full frame cameras tend to have lots and lots of pixels. That is many times perfectly OK, but sometimes it is just an unnecessary burden. I have and use both full frame and crop frame equipment, but when I stop and choose intelligently, it's not the 45 mp full frame camera most of the time.

Full-frame offers real benefit when shooting wide angle. Is that what you do or want to do?

Gaining the benefits of a full frame camera will require new lenses. Any crop lenses you have will not mount on a full frame Canon. If money is tight, can you manage new lenses?

So my suggestion is to sit down and think about what you want to do. Your head is literally about to be twisted first one way and then another in response to your question. The good news is that the used market is flooded right now with nice used mirror box (DSLR) cameras. Once you decide, you should be able to get a pretty good deal on whatever camera you choose. Unfortubately, I have not found the same bonanza on lenses.

Best wishes as you search.

There are hundreds of reviews of the 6D MII and the R8.
You will be far better served looking at them than listening to Nikon and Sony fanboys here. The bird photo shown by someone here can very easily be done with a 6D MII or the R8.
The R8 is newer and has a better AF than the 6D MII. among other things. In fact it has FF class leading AF.
Good luck in your search. I find that the search and study is almost as fun as getting the camera.

Your quote. "The bird photo shown by someone here can very easily be done with a 6D MII or the R8." My response is YOU WISH. I will show you mine, you show me yours if you think you can match it with a Canon.
Your turn Mr. talking head without an image.

Do you have existing lenses that you wish to use on your new camera? That MIGHT restrict your choices.

What is your budget for a working system?

What do you [wish/intend/need] to photograph? Think about the entire scope of it. Some brands handle certain tasks better than others.

Is weight a consideration?

What brand do you already know?

There are many great cameras from Canon, Sony, Nikon, Panasonic Lumix, Fujifilm, OM Systems (formerly Olympus), Pentax, Sigma, Leica, and more. NOT ONE of them is perfect. But reading reviews and watching reviews on YouTube may steer you in the direction of what MOST meets your needs. ALL of them can make excellent images. SOME of them are better than others at some things.

Choose wisely, not just because "Joe Blow says so." Sites like this tend to get into the same old "Ford vs Chevy" emotional arguments that have been around for years. But the world is more complicated than that, and you will be best served to seek knowledge from many sources.

Fortunately both the R8 and the 6D MII are capable of amazing photos of unlimited types of subjects and not limited to just birds like the a1 seems to be.

The OP asked about two specific Canon cameras, a DSLR and MILC, in the lower price-range for FF digital, and both in the 24MP resolution range, with reference to a budget limitation. But, one member proposes a different brand, at 3x the cost, and litters the post with multiple junk images. We're off to a running start this 2024 at UHH ....
