Since 1903, (except for one Covid year), some perfectly sane souls welcome the new year in Coney Island by taking a refreshing plunge into the Atlantic ocean. The 6000 pre-registered swimmers lined up early to get their wrist-bands to swim in the protected zone between 11a.m - 2 p.m.
I am posting my photos in three sections. In the first, I start with a couple of general scenes. The second and third will be the swimmers entering, cavorting in and leaving the ocean.
In this first posting, I try to show a little bit of the area. Photo number one is the iconic parachute drop and photo number two gives an indication that I got there early. In photo number three, you can see the drum core in blue, getting ready to bring the swimmers down to the ocean from the pavilion behind them. The remaining photos show that I did not get into the ocean (except in advertently). That could explain why you have only certain views.
I still say they are nuts.
The only sane ones are on the beach, high and dry!
