I recently upgraded from my Canon T7i to a Canon R50. I've been wanting to change to the mirrorless system for a while and finally did it. Okay...on to my question. I've sold off all of my old gear (including my Speedlite 430EX), so I'm in the process of re-accumulating updated gear. Lenses I can figure out and decide on. What I'm having a bit of a problem researching and deciding on is a flash unit. I don't use a flash often, but I want something compatible and dependable. Because of not having a frequent use of a flash, I'm a little reluctant to spend $350 on the EL-5 if I can get something that's compatible for less.
So, I thought I'd go to you guys to seek your suggestions.

I believe both Godox and Yongnuo make good quality flashes in the $100 range that are often a clone of the Canon model. I have both a Canon 630EX-RT and the Yongnuo equivalent, and you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference except for the price and the logo on the case.

I’ve had the same experience with Godox. Two good options.
I have a 430 EX II if that would work. $80.00 Inc. shipping

This is a great flash. I have the Nikon version and am extremely happy with it.

I really like my Profoto A1. They make several different flashes that produce really good results.
Godox or the Adorama private labeled Flashpoint which is Godox are my suggestion. The Flashpoint doesn't have to leave the country for any repair/warranty work as I understand it.
There are many makes and models of Speedlights. Recently, Godox, Flashpoint, and Yongnou brands have become popular and each offers models over a wide price range.
Based on my long experience with heavier-duty "professional" flash gear, my recommendation would be one of the Speedlights with a ROUND head. These offer a better quality of light in terms of field coverage and versatility. These models can be used with a selection of dedicated modifiers and can also be combined with many other modifiers and bounce-lighting accessories.
Most of the popular units feature TTL exposure management control and manual operation.
Make certain the unit you select is a model that is compatible with your camera's exposure management system.
Most of the Speedlighinhe medium to high price ranges are rated at in and around 80 watt-seconds. Some claim a higher "guide number" or output but that may be because they have a more concentrated beam spread.
If yi are only an occasional Flash user, remember to take your Flash gear out of storage regularly fire it up, and flash it several times. The capacitors in even the best units can deform and malfunction in prolonged format storage. Speedlghlieto stay in service!
Why did you sell the 430EX? I still use my old 550EX on my R7. It works as well as always. If we know what you didn't like about the 430, we might make a better suggestion.

Your 430EX probably works just great with your EOS R50, with no need to replace. I'd start with the R50 user manual in the Flash Photography section, along with the equipment in hand, and see what / how it works.

I didn't think that it would work....that in retrospect was a mistake.

Well....I no longer have it. So, a moot point.
