Amen to all that.

I have noticed that creative images are most often produced by users of lightweight gear. I have also noticed that many users of heavy outfits wear an "aura" of heroism about their massive gear, but their technically high grade results exhibit little to no creativity. Theres something like an inverse square relationship between creativity and that sort of "heroism".

I'm constantly fighting to be more creative. It's hard. Making gear work is easy for me.

Tripod discussions are frequent here on UHH. There is no doubt that a heavy, rock steady, full size tripod is frequently useful. I have one.

Based on frequency of use, I have one that is a bit different. B&H says I bought it in 2017 and paid $44! It still looks and feels brand new. I've used it as a "chest stabilizer", slide copy stand and simple handle. It works to hold an LED light. I've used it on a selfie stick to make it stand up. Used conventionally it makes any chair, stool, table or stump into a replacement for the big one.

The price is a little higher now but, for what it does, it is still a good value.

My favorite Tripods are My Gitzo GT5561 sgt with a Wimberly Wh200 (it compares to the newer GT5563gs) for telephoto and outdoor closeups.
For lancscapes: Manfroto 055CXpro four with Acra-tech ball head
Neither are /were cheap, but both have been in service close to fifteen years. Both are carbon fiber>

For home use a have a big old Gitzo that weighs a ton and I got used for $150. I was about to drop $600 on a carbon fiber Gitzo when I picked up an Arctise on Amazon for $300 with the ball head and I’ve been very happy with it, often shooting 30-60 sec exposures. For travel I have a super light Sirui that’s ok in a pinch, but I’m waiting for a travel tripod from Benro that’s a kickstarter deal. The other thing I love for travel/hiking that’s always in my bag is the Platypod Extreme. I’ll see people struggling with a full size tripod in the middle of a stream, trying to shoot waterfalls. Within a couple of minutes I have my camera set up on a rock at a nice low angle and I’m shooting.

Much of this topic drifted toward large, conventional tripods. My fault mostly. I didn't construct the title well enough.

The Platypod Extreme definitely fits the small group and, with luck, one day I will succumb temptation and buy one.

I once bought, and still have, a smaller one to go on the bottom of a Sony RX100.

Ive only had the platypod extreme for a few months but i really like it. Much smaller than a full sized tripod and more stable than any travel tripod i have had.

Yup! Sold my larger Bogen with 3-way head, and replaced it with a carbon fiber one, but still have my 3018.
I still use a medium-weight Manfrotto tripod that my Good Lady Wife gifted me one Christmas. I've wished to replace its 3 way head with a Ball head, but can't get it off the center column. Oh, well...it works O.K.
At 85, NOTHING more than 100 yards from the car is interesting, and VR + adjustable ISO make 'pods less of a necessity nowadays.

flyboy, look under the round platform at the top of the center column. Often on Bogen/Manfrotto there are 3 recessed screws. Try loosening those and see if your "stuck" head can unscrew now.

Me. It is old and heavy, but I like it.
