I really like the second one except I had to wait 20 minutes to respond to let my monitor and keyboard to thaw.

Just apply some luke warm, wet towels to the affected areas. You’ll eventually thaw out, Mike.

I understand it can get pretty cold there, too.

I was in Fairbanks several years ago trying to demonstrate a Cessna. We got up in the morning to airport temperatures within a couple of degrees of being below the minimum for airline operations. I wish I could remember the actual temperature.

We went to Denny's for breakfast where everyone inside was wearing a warm coat. I complained to the waitress about it being cold and suggested they turn the furnace up. Her reply was something like, "Honey, we have enough propane pressure to cook your eggs or run the furnace, but not both."

That’s Fairbanks! Back in ‘74’ I was flying a helicopter up North along what was called The Haul Road back then, with a couple technicians from RCA who were checking on radio relay sites. It was winter and cold. At one point I was getting low on fuel and was going to land at the Happy Valley camp. When I radioed in they said I couldn’t land because it was too cold. I checked the outside air temp gauage on the helicopter and saw that it was -54˚F!! Our cutoff was -30˚ due to the possibility of metal becoming cold brittle. So I turned around and went to Galbraith camp and was stuck for 3 days because their jet fuel was contaminated. Darned winter anyway. But that’s Alaska. I’m still chuckling at your waitress’s comment about the propane.

For me it was '99 or '00. I was with Cessna's Anchorage dealer. If I had to guess at my memory, we were at about -28Ëš because I think I remember the story that Boeing didn't certify their airplanes to work at -30Ëš. We got the 172 Skyhawk started (barely) and once we got above about 1500 feet we warmed up. The dealer got to file for and get paid to install new wingtips because they cracked.

Very cold weather isn’t kind to airplanes, especially small aircraft.

Indeed it is. There’s a certain point where the number doesn’t really matter—it’s just damned cold!

With all due respect, you can keep your cold weather. The older I get the less tolerant I am of the cold.
