Best guess you have the 850 set to RAW and JPG when taking photos

the copies appear on my PC hard drive that is used only for photo and the copies appear in the same folder. It only occurs on the NEF files and is across the every NEF in some folders and only seems to be on recently upload files. I shoot and upload both NEF and jp One folder has 653 files representing 217 shots each with one JPG and 2 NEF files, one being the original850_6639.NEF and the second is 850_6639_945.NEF the dash number is different for every file.

Do you load directly from a card to a specific folder in the computer.
Or is it wandering through a program on the computer to wind up stored?

We don't see the file types.
We do see the different file names.

What you're doing there with your files on your computer with your software, that's kind of hard for us to guess from the limited information presented on a message board.

The file name that shows above appears to be different than the file name of the image as taken by the camera--DSC xxxx. NEF has been changed.

We need to know what program you used to download the NEF files from the card to the computer. And we need to know if you changed DSC...to something else in the camera.

Try looking at the file folder that holds the images in Nikon NX Studio and tell us what image types are being displayed. If you are on a pc, do a screen print of the file names in the file folder and post it.

When I shoot the D850 I write the NEF (raw) to a SanDisk 128 GB extreme Pro CFexpress with a 1200 MB/s write speed and the JPG to a SanDIsk 128GB Extreme Pro with a 170 MB/sec write speed. I usually use Nikon transfer 2 to transfer the photos to the computer. So unless there was an issue that is what I used for these photos.
I save the both NEF and JPG to the 2 TB internal drive E that is only used for photos into the folder E:\Lightroom then into subfolders as required. Attached is a screenshot of the folder with the self duplicate feature. So far this is the only folder that I find this issue. Every NEF in this folder has a renamed copy that starts at _945.NEF and goes though_1380. Most of the time to edit the photos I use Adobe lightroom; but, sometimes I use ADCsee.
Searching the whole Lightroom directory did not find a file named 850-***_944 that would been the file ahead of "_945.NEF. Looking at photos shot with the same camera taken on 2023-08-19 with the file name 850_6635_806.NEF and 850_6635_938.JPG. the last three digits are not in the camera. There maybe something going on with Nikon Transfer 2.

All I can suggest is that you check all of your settings in Nikon Transfer. The latest manual for it can be found at this link:

thanks for the suggestion. I will check to see if i latest version. If this event is caused by Nikon Transfer 2 settings then I need to know what I change recently. The info on pages 14 and 15 may shed some light on the issue of strange file names on the computer.
