Traffic on the East River starts early and ends late.
I shot the second image while sitting in a booth in the diner. Somewhere within a half mile or so someone is about to receive breakfast. Many of us here in the city have kitchens that are only large enough for 3/4 of a person, so the takeout business thrives.
The owner of the restaurant has told me he would hire as many of these immigrants who want to work for him. They are reliable, grateful and willing to work in all types of weather. He thinks many or most tend to send part of what they make back to their families.

Your last sentence, the Irish, Italians, Chinese, basically all past immigrants have done this since at least the 1840s. and so it continues. It is the oxygen of America. In many ways, thank God for the immigrants. BTW, photos are great as well. Love the energy of NYC.

The immigrants come to America and work hard for low pay so that their children can become doctors. Then those doctors work hard so that their children can become artists. Great shots, but please tell that bike messenger not to ride on the sidewalks.

That doesn't bother me nearly as much as their going the wrong way on one-way streets, and not paying any attention to traffic lights. If I hit them with my car, it's my fault.

Unfortunately, a good friend of mine was killed by a bike messenger about twenty years ago.
