A Workout

The nice thing about being on the High Line is that you can see into windows that are above the street level. Here a gym that is on the second floor of a building. You always get reflections when shooting through glass. I could have reduced these with a polarizing filter; but I think the reflections are interesting in their own right and add to the photo. I did not do that much to this other than convert to black and white and then add a "nostalgic film" filter from NIK. I also had to reduce the amount of glare that was right where the man's face is. I whish I had crouched down a bit to make the glare be above his head; but I also did not want him to see me and change his position or walk away. I guess when you work out in a fishbowl, you get used to people watching you.

Beautiful shot Erich. The reflections of course make the shot something special

How inventive! I wonder how many people have looked through through glass and saw reflections, as you did, and it just went right ober their heads...yet you saw it with the eyes of an artist! Good for you!

I cropped this a lot. There is some window below the man and behind that simply did not add anything to the composition. The crop makes the reflections more pronounced. As you noted, they are an integral part of the impact. Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thank you for the compliment. I don't know about artist; but it is certainly true that photographers see things differently than people who don't photograph things all the time. We notice light intensity, and direction. We also look for reflections and the relationships of things in our field of view. Thanks for taking a look.

Yes, takes a moment to see the reflection in the glass. The scene we do not first see makes the image interesting the intended image is a so-what, but the puzzle of the reflection is mind-grabbing. I wonder if a low-opacity overlay may have a similar effect. Or perhaps photographing the original image with a 45* glass seeing a different image... just one of many ideas.

Your reflected image prompts me to recall the movie Blow Up in which a photographer photographs what was not to be seen. At the edge of the image was someone being murdered in the woods. He was so focused mentally on the main subject, it took him a while to see the unseen.

Glad you did not try to reduce the reflections. In this one shot you have a microcosm of life in a city. From the individual at the gym. The tall buildings. BTW where’s Superman. And the hustle and bustle of daily life.

I wouldn’t start crouching down Erich, you’ll get the wrong sort of reputation! An interesting image though and one I’d be guilty of missing for sure.

I Googled "How to Fake a Window Reflection " There were numerous Tutorials.

I watched a couple of video tutorials, genereally the reflected image layer is blended with "screen mode" and the curve of bright/dark is squeezed toward the middle from each end so the street image is less distinct, less dynamic range. Also the color saturation is reduced. When layering, some blur may be added, and when mating the layers the street image opacity is greatly reduced.

In Paintshop Pro, double clicking on the the layer image and suddenly a menu box that appears. Within the box there are many adjustments. ebrunner, your real image prompted me to search and expand my knowledge of how to create a fabricated reflected image constructed.

Once with a taste of how-too, it is tempting to a step beyond and add an 'rain drop on glass' intermediate layer. In the future, I will create a street reflection composite image, and give you credit for the push. Thank you ebrunner

Intriguing! The window frame holds it all together, the motion suggests a heavy-duty workout, the reflections of the buildings set the scene perfectly.

I looked for Superman; but I think, today, he was disguised as a mild mannered reporter. I knew that later in the day, when the sun when down, I'd be heading toward Rockefeller Center. That would be all the "hustle and bustle" I can stand, so avoiding as much of the chaos in the afternoon was the plan.
