Who said G = "gelded"? Was it Rockwell?

Anyone know who first said the "G" label on a Nikkor lens means "gelded"? Does Nikon make this reference or was it Ken? (I think that's where I saw it).

Good point, unlike gelding, it's not like the lens is missing something that is essential. Electronics have replaced manually operated rings on lenses.
