I haven't seen fighting among customers, but they do complain to the workers - and it's not their fault!

We pump our own gas and do our own shopping in supermarkets, so checking out the order was the next logical step, unfortunately.

Next is unloading the trucks and stocking shelves before you can shop.

Apparently people like self-checkouts. Those lines are usually longer than the traditional lines.

Fortunately, living in New York City, many of the self-checkouts at chain drug and mass merchandiser stores are being shut down owing to all of the thefts created by "customers" who skip paying at the self-checkouts. We're returning to cashier check outs (...once the clerks unlock the cabinets where everything valued at over $5.00 are kept safe from rampaging thieves).

I've seen/heard indications that some stores are considering removal of self chec out because ther is significant shoplifting (people not actually exposing the bar codes and thus the item is not being included in the cost). It sems those exclusions are adding up to a rather tidy sum.

And yet I went into our local Kohls store, haven't been shopping there in some time.
They added a whole bunch of self-serve checkout registers.
I like them.
