For years I can crop 1.2 x using DX lenses, both Nikon's and Tokina's. But today w/o software update, my D750 auto sets it to 1.5 crop with a DX lens. I just cannot set to 1.2 crop. But I can with a FX lens. Any ideas? Thanks

Aren't DX lenses designed for the 1.5 crop? The software may be designed to recognize the DX lens and switch to this crop? Never knew I could over ride it.

Never mind. I find the solution. I accidently turned on 'Auto DX crop' in 'Image area'.
I checked it 'off'. Now I can crop 1.2 using my DX lenses. I ran through the manual years ago, took me days. Suddenly this remind my age again, 72 y. young

Do you happen to have any DX lenses with loads of excess coverage beyond 16x24mm ?

I do have one and the Z series refuses to let me use all the image the way my 750 allows. Since its an ultrawide this is verrrry irritating.

All of the Z cameras that I have looked at have enforced this restriction. It's one of the quirks that have caysed me to delay getting one of the cameras, including the Z8.

Nikon was very intent on showing improved image quality with the new Z cameras and lenses, so while some Dx lenses may have coverage beyond the Dx format , even on those that do ,Nikon may feel that the image quality is not up to their standards, and clearly not all Dx lenses have enough image circle to cover 1.2 crop.
So my guess is Nikon just doesn't want to support lenses being used in that way.
That would be my guess, especially since I don't believe they ever made a camera with an APS-H sensor.
Canon on the other hand, who made lots of APS-H sensor cameras, modified the mount on APS-C lenses so that the would not even mount on FF or APS-H Bodies. (Not sure if that is still the policy for mirrorless cameras)

Yes, the Nikon 70-300 AF-P, f/4.5-6.3 is usable at 1.2 crop. It is great at DX crop. The Tokina 12-28 mm, F/4 DX is usable at 1.2 crop. and can use at full frame from 16 -28 mm. Even the kit lens 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VRII is usable at 1.2 crop.
I like to use those DX lenses on my D750, easy to carry for 5-6 hrs. My other favorite carried all day FX lenses are AF D 85 f/1.8, AF D Micro 105 mm f/2.8 and the 28-85 mm AF D f/3.5-4.5 from the film SLR years.

Not a “quirk”.
In general, Nikon cameras are designed for 3:2 photography.

My D850 offers a choice of 4 (maybe 5) different formats. They are all accessible with both FX and DX lenses. I've used most of them with all my lenses. It's an important capability for me. My D850 also offers at least 3 format choices. I've used all of them as well.

So yes...to me it is a quirky and suboptimal design choice. I don't even have the basic option on a Z8 to just shoot full frame and crop the vignette away later.

Nope. Its clearly a quirk. No complaint about any camera that would ALWAYS use a 3:2 aspect ratio.

The complaint is that unlike Nikon 3:2 FF SLRs, Nikon 3:2 FF EVFs will ENFORCE a DX crop when using a DX lens.

Its a quirk in that its completely unnecessary and arbitrary, as proven by Nikons own SLRs which do allow disabling the DX crop.

Oops...that last should have said that my D500 offers at least 3 format choices.
