Beautifully restored machine! I'm guessing the bike on the trailer is a spare, in case the powered quadcycle gets a flat or the engine runs out of gas.

Hey, Stan. Good to hear from you.

It could be that the bike was a salient confession from the manufacturer that it would be prudent to anticipate and prepare for something going wrong.

I'm left wondering how literally to take the "buried" in the back yard. Could it really have been buried in a dug grave or just abandoned and left to decay? That nit picking aside, it's a great find and posting. Thank you.

Thanks for looking in. I really appreciate you commenting.

I was talking with the person " assigned " to lookover security for this vehicle....a common practice for things of CONSIDERABLE value. He told me that it had, in fact, been buried under ground. He didn't know if it was placed in a grate or some other protective cover.

You don’t have to drive 40 miles in one hour to do 40 mph. All you have to do is get up to speed, drive a short distance and voila 40 mph in only a short distance

If you check the download, the sign on the plaque on the bike said they went 40 miles and 330 yards in one hour. Sounds like they were at it for an hour and not just getting up to 40 miles an hours. I did 57 mph on a mountain bike going down a straight road and steep hill and I was essentially coasting because I couldn't pedal fast enough in high gear to push the bike any faster. Was kind of scary which I image this was doing 40 mph for an hour on a track designed for horse racing.

Quite interesting contraption! And the 'spare' doesn't have fenders, would hate to ride that in a muddy area. Still, a beauty of a bike, and horseless carriage!

Thanks for visiting, Doug.

I appreciate the comments.

I’m guessing the driver was a chauffeur of a wealthy individual. The spare would be for chauffeur to take to get assistance. Not to nit pick, but says it traveled 40 miles + in one hour. I’d be surprised if someone road in front during the test. An amazing machine. Especially when you look at what had to be hand fabrication.

Thanks for looking in.

you're right. There was a ton of hand fabrication.

That is a very interesting series. I was fascinated so I had to look up the history on it. It looks like the woman standing next to it is wearing period clothing.

Hey, Jill. It's good to hear from you.

The lady was indeed wearing period clothing. She was part of a twosome. Her partner was in contemporary clothing. Their secondary function is to provide security for the exhibit. No " hands on " from the crowd is allowed.

According to what I read, it was disassembled before it was burried. It took the current owner 6 years to restore it.

BTW Google is fast. When I typed in 1899 Orient Auto Quadricycle, your thread came up as the 3rd hit! It is higher than the link I found to read about it.
