I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado. It's got 128 thousand miles on it. Yesterday on a two hour road trip the cab heater motor kicked out momentarily a few times. Today I took it a nearby Chevy dealer. They said I need to replace the fan motor. Said with the new motor and labor the cost would come to $599.38.and that they could have the new motor over-nighted to them from Chicago. (Guessing that would explain a big part of the cost). I looked up the motor part # on line. The average cost for the exact same fan motor is $60.00 to $80.00. Glad I didn't give them the green light on placing the order. From looking at some "on-line" sites I see that it isn't all that difficult to replace the motor. I get it that they need to make a profit but that seem a little extreme. End of rant!

Next car ...get a Nissan. We had a van, quest with 360K miles on it and had to spend only a grand for repairs the time we had it.

I don't know about Illinois but in NJ the mechanic is required to post his or her hourly rate in the customer area of the shop. Then they have to go by the flat rate manual which says how long the job should take. If their hourly rate is $120 and the manual says the job takes 45 minutes they would charge the customer $90 for the labor. If the mechanic is good and everything goes well maybe they get it done in 35 minutes and make a little better rate. If there are frozen bolts that break off and need to be drilled and tapped, the mechanic eats the extra time it takes. I don't know if there are rules about how much they can mark up parts. The final bill should break down the time and parts by line item. Of course by then you've already agreed to have them do the work. You could ask them to break down the bill ahead of time.

$60 parts, labor? it takes maybe twenty mins when being done under a tree just one screw is a bitch ( very bottom)
Years ago the same thing happened to my daughters Honda Civic they told her the same price that you were quoted and replacement required removal of the dash & the motor was a dealer only part.
Called Carquest motor delivered to me at work $60, labor it took me less than two mins to remove and 3-4 mins to reinstall.
Emily being like me stopped by the shop she had been using and they would no longer be getting any more work from her. And knowing my daughter probably made a comment or two about their parentage .

I had a blower motor go in one car once. I think I replaced it myself. It was on the firewall in the engine compartment in that car.

My favorite though was the dealer wanted $300-400 to replace a $20 electronic ignition module in my van.
$20 at Walmart then..... about 10 minutes....

Having owned Jaguars since the 1960s, I consider any service that costs less than $1,000 to be a bargain!

Warranties are important. I had a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe. At 98,500 miles the transmission died. The warranty was 100,000 miles. They replaced it.

I have a 2021 Silverado diesel that I let the dealership I bought it from change the diesel filter. To purge the air from the filter you hold the start button for 5 seconds with your foot off the brake. They charged me $60 just for that. Filter was extra.

Not all blower motors are a couple minute swap. Some you lay on your back on the floor, (Dodge Caravan) some you replace from under the hood, (Ford Ranger) and some you have to remove the front seat because the length between your fingertips and elbow is literally too long (Ford Tempo). And to replace the AC evaporator on a Dodge Caravan, the entire dash, duct work and everything has to come out. It’s the very first component installed on the assembly line, thus the last to come out. All of the above have been on my own vehicles.

To replace the heater core in my ‘86 Mustang, you have to remove the dash, a major task. While the dash was out I also replaced the blower motor. The replacement blower motor is so loud that I decided to keep the old one and put it back in if the dash came out again.

I once had a Ford Mystique (bad choice) the heater switch would only work on high, the Dealer replaced it under warranty 3 times. I finally told them it must be pulling too much current, to check the motor, when I went in to pick it up they said, it's fine now. I asked what was wrong, the answer was "We had to replace the fan motor and switch (again)

Most Mustangs have to pull the dash out to change the leaky heater core and probably the fan motor too! My 69 Mustang was leaking when I sold it but I told my friend all about it beforehand and reduced the price to compensate. A week later his wife called and cursed me out for selling them a damaged car and wanted their money back! I laughed and told her go talk to her husband again he knew all about it at the time of sale. People are weird and selfish at times…
