I am spending 10 days in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area in mid January. What are some photographic opportunities within an hour+/- drive?

THANK YOU!

Gamble Plantation at Ellenton, Fort DeSoto, evening shots of the Sunshine Skyway bridge would be cool.

The burrowing owls of Cape Coral were worthwhile for us. Biggest population in Florida is there. Easy to google their locations near the library, etc.

To the east is Bok Tower Gardens (world famous) for their tower with bells & all of the walkways with literally every flower you can imagine. A little more than an hour in Lakeland is the Circle B Bar Reserve. Numerous well marked trails with several various wildlife (January is a hot time for Bald Eagles nesting). North of Ft. Myers by an hour is Mote Marine Lab & Aquarium (world famous..Allow at least 2-3 hours).

If you don't mind a little drive, go to Sarasota and visit the Ringling Estate. The house and grounds are beautiful, and they have a circus museum there. We spent a very pleasant afternoon in that area.

JJENK, I live in Fort Myers, and would be happy to consult. Let’s do it by PM, which would be faster and more personal.

For all those who are recommending Sanibel and Ding Darling, sad to say that these places are not (yet) the wonderful places that you may have visited in the past. Hurricane Ian overwashed much of Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. I would generously put the recovery at about 33%. The rebuilding efforts also impact access. Traffic onto Sanibel over the temporary causeway can back up for an hour or more. And although Ding Darling reopened last April, most visitors have been disappointed by the bird population. There are many other places to go birding that do not involve long periods sitting in traffic.

But, please come visit. It is still warmer than wherever you are coming from!
